Objective: This study was designed to investigate the effects of bilateral ovariectomy and fructose diet on obesity-related metabolic parameters in female rats. The potential of resveratrol, alone and in combination with melatonin, to counter ensuing obesity and precipitated metabolic disturbances was explored.

Methods: Eight-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to bilateral ovariectomy (OVX) or sham operation and randomly assigned to standard diet (SD) or fructose diet (FD) groups (n = 6 rats per group) as follows: Sham; OVX + FD; OVX + SD; OVX + FD + resveratrol 50 mg/kg/day PO (RESV); OVX + SD + RESV; OVX + FD + melatonin 3 mg/kg/day PO in drinking water (M); OVX + SD + M; OVX + FD + RESV + M; OVX + SD + RESV + M. All treatments were given for 7 weeks. Biochemical, dietary, and anthropometrical parameters were estimated, and abdominal fat pads and the liver were examined for histopathological alterations.

Results: Ovariectomy caused an increase in body weight, body mass index, feed efficiency, serum glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and free fatty acids, which was further exacerbated by fructose diet. These parameters were significantly decreased by resveratrol, alone and in combination with melatonin. Histopathological examination revealed reduced hypertrophy of adipocytes in adipose tissue and reduced macrophage infiltration in the liver.

Conclusions: Resveratrol/melatonin combination effectively normalizes anthropometrical, biochemical, and histopathological parameters in ovariectomized rats with fructose diet-induced obesity and associated metabolic alterations. The combination should be explored for potential benefits in postmenopausal women.

Microbes experience dynamic conditions in natural habitats as well as in engineered environments, such as large-scale bioreactors, which exhibit increased mixing times and inhomogeneities. While single perturbations have been studied for several organisms and substrates, the impact of recurring short-term perturbations remains largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to repetitive gradients of four different sugars: glucose, fructose, sucrose, and maltose.

Background: Prediabetes is a condition that often precedes the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Literature evidence indicates that prediabetes is reversible, making it an important therapeutic target for preventing the progression to T2DM. Several studies have investigated intermittent fasting as a possible method to manage or treat prediabetes.

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome has been exponentially increasing in recent decades. Thus, there is an increasing need for affordable and natural interventions for this disorder. We explored the effect of chrysin, a dietary polyphenol, on hepatic lipid and glycogen accumulation, metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) activity score and oxidative stress and on hepatic and adipose tissue metabolism in rats presenting metabolic syndrome-associated conditions.

: High fructose intake is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a chronic liver disease that is on the rise worldwide. New alternatives for treatment, such as bioactive phytochemicals, are needed. The aim of this study was to investigate the beneficial role of resveratrol in treating non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Background/objective: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by abdominal obesity, increased blood pressure (BP), fasting blood glucose (FBG) and triglyceride levels, and reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of the Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells (WJMSCs)-derived small extracellular vesicles' (sEVs) preparations in managing MetS.

Method: Twenty-four rats were fed with a high-fat and high-fructose diet to induce MetS for 16 weeks and randomized into three groups ( = 8/group): a MetS Control group treated with normal saline, MetS Low Dose (LD) group treated with a LD of sEVs preparations (3 × 10 particle/rat), and MetS High Dose (HD) group treated with a HD of sEVs preparations (9 × 10 particles/rat).
