Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of leptomeningeal metastases (LM) from solid tumors and to develop better treatment strategies.

Methods: The clinical characteristics and follow-up results of 77 cases of leptomeningeal metastases (LM) from solid tumors diagnosed and treated in our hospital from 2002 to 2011 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical characteristics, treatment methods and overall survival were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression model.

Results: The median survival time for all the patients was 88 days. KPS score, control of the primary tumor and systemic treatment were correlated with survival time for the patients (P < 0.05 for all). The median survival time of systemic treatment was 150 d and those without systemic treatment (chemotherapy and/or targeted therapy) after LM was 60 d (P = 0.001). Systemic therapy combined with local treatment (radiotherapy to the meninges or intrathecal chemotherapy) further improved the survival time of patients. Multivariate analysis showed that KPS and short-term therapeutic response for the LM were independent prognostic factors (P < 0.05 for both).

Conclusions: KPS and short-term therapeutic response are independent prognostic factores for leptomeningeal metastases from solid tumors. Systemic chemotherapy or targeted therapy can prolong the survival time. Systemic treatment (chemotherapy and/or targeted therapy) combined with radiation therapy or intrathecal injection may further improve the clinical outcomes.

Introduction: Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) is the main predictive biomarker used to identify patients with NSCLC who are eligible for treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Despite its utility, the predictive capacity of PD-L1 is limited, necessitating the exploration of supplementary predictive biomarkers. In this report, we describe the prognostic value of / mutation status for overall survival (OS) in patients with NSCLC treated with first-line immunotherapy or combined chemoimmunotherapy.

Introduction: There is scarce data in literature on the demographics, treatment, and outcomes of subtrochanteric femur fracture patients. This study evaluated the effect of age on injury details, perioperative and hospital parameters, and outcomes following subtrochanteric fracture fixation.

Methods: An IRB-approved review of a consecutive series of subtrochanteric femoral fractures was performed.

Purpose: Highly sensitized patients (HSPs) with kidney failure have limited access to kidney transplantation and poorer post-transplant outcomes. Prioritizing HSPs in kidney allocation systems and expanding the pool of deceased donors available to them has helped to reduce their wait times for transplant and enhanced post-transplant outcomes. The Canadian HSP Program was established by Canadian Blood Services in collaboration with provincial organ donation and transplantation programs throughout the country to increase transplant opportunities for transplant candidates needing very specific matches from deceased kidney donors.

Introduction: Alongside sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle strength and power, known as dynapenia, increases the risk of functional disability and mortality in older adults. However, engaging in sporting activities during old age appears to enhance functional capacity. The differences in effects between athletes and sedentary individuals, as well as between genders, have yet to be fully clarified.

Brain metastasis and primary glioblastoma multiforme represent the most common and lethal malignant brain tumors. Its median survival time is typically less than a year after diagnosis. One of the major challenges in treating these cancers is the efficiency of the transport of drugs to the central nervous system.
