Background: Citizen Science (CS) offers a promising approach to enhance data collection and engage communities in conservation efforts. This study evaluates the use of CS in environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring for Mediterranean monk seal conservation. We validated CS by assessing the effectiveness of a newly developed CS-friendly filtration system called "WET" (Water eDNA Trap) in eDNA detection, addressing technical challenges, and analysing volunteer faults.

The Moche archaeological culture flourished along Peru's North Coast between the 4th and 10th centuries CE and was characterized by a complex social hierarchy dominated by political and religious elites. Previous archaeological evidence suggests kinship was a key factor in maintaining political authority within Moche society. To test this hypothesis, we applied archaeological, genetic, and isotopic methods to examine familial relationships between six individuals, including the prominent Señora de Cao (), buried together in a pyramid-like, painted temple, Huaca Cao Viejo, in the Chicama Valley, Peru.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) affects 1 in 36 children and is characterized by repetitive behaviors and difficulties in social interactions and social communication. The etiology of ASD is extremely heterogeneous, with a large number of ASD cases that are of unknown or complex etiology, which suggests the potential contribution of epigenetic risk factors. In particular, epidemiological and animal model studies suggest that inflammation during pregnancy could lead to an increased risk of ASD in the offspring.

Association of CASP8 rs3834129 and CTGF rs6918698 genotypes with susceptibility to colorectal cancer in a Mexican population.

Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand)

November 2024

División de Medicina Molecular, Centro de Investigación Biomédica de Occidente, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS), Guadalajara, Jalisco, México.

Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) and Caspase 8 (CASP8) have been implicated in cancer development and progression. Variants such as CASP8 rs3834129 (-652 6N I/D) and CTGF rs6918698 (-945 C>G) have been associated with several cancers, although their association is still debated between populations. This study investigates the possible association between the CASP8 rs3834129 and CTGF rs6918698 variants with  colorectal cancer (CRC) in Mexican patients.

Hypothyroidism is the most prevalent thyroid disorder and leads to adverse effects on the human body. Serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) values have been related to polymorphisms in multiple genes that may be involved in the regulation of thyroid function. The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2046045 is situated in the intron region of the phosphodiesterase 8B (PDE8B) gene, which encodes a high-affinity cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-specific phosphodiesterase widely expressed in thyroid tissue.
