Artificial Intelligence and Radiomics in Cholangiocarcinoma: A Comprehensive Review.

Diagnostics (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Medical Surgical Sciences and Translational Medicine, Sapienza-University of Rome, Radiology Unit-Sant'Andrea University Hospital, 00189 Rome, Italy.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a malignant biliary system tumor and the second most common primary hepatic neoplasm, following hepatocellular carcinoma. CCA still has an extremely high unfavorable prognosis, regardless of type and location, and complete surgical resection remains the only curative therapeutic option; however, due to the underhanded onset and rapid progression of CCA, most patients present with advanced stages at first diagnosis, with only 30 to 60% of CCA patients eligible for surgery. Recent innovations in medical imaging combined with the use of radiomics and artificial intelligence (AI) can lead to improvements in the early detection, characterization, and pre-treatment staging of these tumors, guiding clinicians to make personalized therapeutic strategies.

Impact of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty/Steatotic Liver Disease on Hepatocellular Carcinoma Incidence and Long-Term Prognosis Post-Liver Resection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Acad Radiol

January 2025

Division of Hepatic Surgery, Department of General Surgery, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, PR China (Q.K., D.K., W.P., Z.C.). Electronic address:

Background: This study investigates the influence of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD)/metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) on the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among general population and patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). It also explores its implications for the long-term prognosis of HCC patients following hepatic resection.

Methods: Relevant studies were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, including adherence to diagnostic criteria for MAFLD/MASLD and reporting hazard ratios (HRs) using Cox proportional hazards models.

Background: The modern approach to treating rectal cancer, which involves total mesorectal excision directed by imaging assessments, has significantly enhanced patient outcomes. However, locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC) continues to be a significant clinical issue. Identifying LRRC through imaging is complex, due to the mismatch between fibrosis and inflammatory pelvic tissue.

The Hepatorenal Syndrome-Acute Kidney Injury (HRS-AKI) patients infected with methicillin-resistant (MRSA) urgently require safe and effective treatment options due to their compromised hepatic and renal functions, as well as thrombocytopenia resulting from hypersplenism. In our case, an HRS-AKI patient who underwent continuous renal replacement therapy for fluid overload developed fever with chills. His blood tests indicated elevated C-reactive protein and neutrophils, low platelet count, and bilateral lung infiltrates.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as an innovative approach in cancer treatment, effectively inducing tumor cell death through light-triggered reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Additionally, PDT can also trigger antitumor immune responses, thereby reducing the risk of postoperative tumor recurrence. However, the development of highly efficient photosensitizers aimed at activating immune responses for comprehensive tumor eradication remains at an early stage.
