Objective: To observe the efficacy of the combination of Qilin Pills and levofloxacin in the treatment of asthenospermia accompanied with accessory sex gland infection.

Methods: We randomly assigned 80 asthenospermia patients with accessory sex gland infection to groups 1 and 2 of equal number, the former treated with Qilin Pills + levofloxacin, and the latter with levofloxacin only. Qilin Pills were administered at the dose of 6 g tid for 30 days, and levofloxacin at the dose of 0.5 g qd for 20 days. We obtained semen parameters, including the percentage of progressively motile sperm and peroxidase-positive white blood cell (WBC) count, before and after medication, and compared the clinical effects between the two groups.

Results: All the patients accomplished the clinical trial. The therapeutic effectiveness rates in improving progressive sperm motility were 60% in group 1 and 17.5% in group 2, with statistically significant differences between the two groups (P < 0.05). As for the peroxidase-positive WBC count in semen, the effectiveness rates were 87.5% and 82.5%, respectively, with no significant differences between the two groups (P > 0.05).

Conclusion: For the treatment of asthenospermia accompanied with accessory sex gland infection, Qilin Pills combined with levofloxacin is evidently better than levofloxacin alone in improving sperm motility, and it has no obvious adverse effects.

Bull fertility is a multi-factorial trait and is affected by many factors, such as nutrition, genetics, and epigenetics. Superior quality male germplasm with high genetic merit helps to improve the livestock production trait. To achieve the target of livestock production, the availability of superior male germplasm is a great concern.

Diet influence on male sexual maturation through interplay between insulin signaling and juvenile hormone in insects.

In animals, sexual maturation coincides with the development of sexual behaviors and reproductive system. These developmental events are influenced by diet and governed by endocrine signals. Here, for the first time in insects, we explored functional links between nutrition and juvenile hormone (JH) in the male reproductive physiology through the insulin signaling pathway (ISP) acting as a transducer of nutritional signals.

Seminal fluid proteins in the Queensland fruit fly: tissue origins, effects of mating and comparative genomics.

Applied BioSciences, Macquarie University, NSW 2109, Australia; CSIRO Environment, Black Mountain, ACT 2601, Australia.

In many insect species, the ability of males to inhibit their mates from remating is an important component of fitness. This ability is also essential for the effective management of insect pests, including tephritid fruit flies, using the Sterile Insect Technique. Here we apply transcriptomics and proteomics to male reproductive tissues before and after mating to characterize components of semen that might mediate remating inhibition in Queensland fruit fly.

Background: Desmotomy of the accessory ligament of the superficial digital flexor tendon (AL-SDFT) has been described for the treatment of superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) tendinopathy in Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses, and in event horses. To our knowledge, the outcome of this procedure has not been described in a population of warmblood horses.

Objective: To report on the outcome of treatment of SDFT tendinopathy in warmblood horses using tenoscopic desmotomy of the main part of the AL-SDFT.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to check for the presence of Tritrichomonas foetus in male reproductive tissues of bulls that tested positive and analyzed how post mortem tissue acidity affects testing accuracy.
  • Eight bulls were euthanized, and samples from their testicles, epididymis, and accessory sex glands were collected; however, T foetus was not found in any of these tissues.
  • Researchers found that as the pH of the penis and prepuce decreased after death, the cycle threshold values increased, indicating that pH changes could influence the effectiveness of detecting genetic material over time.
