Tumor resection of a cancer lesion produces maxillary defects that can be easily restored with an obturator to close the defect area. Postsurgical maxillary defects predispose a patient to hypernasal speech, fluid leakage into the nasal cavity, and impaired masticatory function. Therefore, the primary aims of prosthetic rehabilitation in total and partial maxillectomy patients include: separation of oral and nasal cavities to allow adequate deglutition and articulation, possible support of orbital contents and support of soft tissue to restore mid-facial contours. A method of fabricating a simple hollow obturator for maxillectomy patients is described. The use of a relatively long-lasting light cure resin materials in making obturators allows stable, comfortable, and effective obturation. The hollow prosthesis is lightweight and sufficiently flexible to allow relatively simple placement in retentive undercut regions.

Associate Professor, Department of Prosthetic Dental Sciences, College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Electronic address:

Statement Of Problem: Evidence is lacking on the influence of different designs of bulb support structures on the accuracy of 3-dimensional (3D) printed obturators.

Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of various infill designs (hollow, honeycomb, and gyroid) for the bulb of an obturator on the accuracy and weight of digital light projection (DLP) 3D printed maxillary obturators.

Material And Methods: A maxillary obturator was virtually designed and used to obtain 3 digital reference files which were defined based on the design of the infill support structure within the bulb: hollow, honeycomb, and gyroid.

Speech is the most basic yet invaluable mode of expression for an individual. Alterations in speech can have vast effects on the psychological well-being of a person, hampering social interactions. Congenital or traumatic defects of the hard and soft palate result in velopharyngeal dysfunction, which often results in abnormal and aberrant speech.

A fully digital approach to replacing an obturator prosthesis using a 3D printed closed hollow bulb: Α dental technique.

The replacement of an obturator prosthesis using conventional methods has multiple issues. Standard tessellation language files generated from the superimposition of an accurate intraoral scanning of the maxillary defect and direct data acquisition of the existing hollow bulb obturator can facilitate the precise design of the prosthesis, requiring only minor adjustments. Rapid prototyping manufacturing techniques seem to ensure precise control of the integrity of the prosthetic component completion.
