The O-glycan is a heptasaccharide that includes a putative L-fucose and N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) as the 5th and 6th sugar residues respectively. Periodontal disease (PD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are both inflammatory diseases affecting the tooth and joint, with local inflammation associated with bone loss. Bacterial infections by oral bacteria are involved in periodontal inflammation, and the best known to be associated with PD is Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg). A large body of recent data suggests a strong involvement of this specific bacteria, Pg, in PD outcomes, but also in RA.

Objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and stroke are two highly related conditions, with periodontitis and periodontal pathogens, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), appearing to be the most prominent common risk factors. In this study, we evaluated studies assessing Pg infection via serum/plasma anti-Pg antibodies in patients with AF and/or stroke.

Periodontitis (PD) is characterized by the host's inflammatory responses to microbial dental biofilm dysbiosis, potentially resulting in tooth loss if left untreated. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease leading to synovial inflammation and destruction of joint cartilage and bone. The suggested association between PD and RA is based on the potential of chronic inflammation present in periodontitis, which could induce alterations in proteins through post-translational modifications, leading to the formation of citrullinated and carbamylated protein antigens.
