The avidin-biotin-peroxidase-antiperoxidase complex method (ABPAP) of immunohistochemistry employs the sequential application of the peroxidase-antiperoxidase complex (PAP) and the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) technics. To assess the efficacy of ABPAP in the detection of cellular antigens and to compare its utility with that of protease digestion technics, the authors studied cytokeratin (CK) reactivity in six examples each of colon, prostate, and breast cancer and Leu-M1 reactivity in five ductal breast carcinomas. ABC, PAP and ABPAP were applied to these cases alone and in combination with prior pepsin digestion of deparaffinized sections. With respect to the number of cells that stained and their intensity in each case, there was significant enhancement of CK and Leu-M1 reactivity with ABPAP, as compared with ABC and PAP when pepsin digestion was not employed. Further, ABPAP provided undigested CK staining results comparable to those seen with the use of ABC or PAP with pepsin digestion. Protease treatment was uniformly detrimental to the visualization of Leu-M1, regardless of the method employed. In summary, ABPAP was clearly superior to ABC and PAP in all settings analyzed. It may prove to be useful adjunct in the immunohistochemical visualization of tissue antigens, when more routine technics yield suboptimal results.

Viral hepatitis during pregnancy is common globally. In this review, we focus on the antenatal screen for hepatitis A, B, C and E, the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of hepatitis B and C, and the management of hepatitis A, B, C and E during pregnancy. Neonatal timely administration of hepatitis B immunoglobulin and hepatitis B vaccine is the cornerstone for preventing MTCT of hepatitis B virus (HBV), and perinatal antiviral prophylaxis with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in mothers with positive HBeAg or HBV DNA >2 × 10 IU/ml also plays important roles in further reducing MTCT.

Objectives: Pap smear screenings are associated with a 60% reduction in cervical cancer rates for women over the age of 40 years. West Texas presents a challenge for cervical cancer screening as demonstrated by some of the highest incidence and mortality rates of any region in Texas. This study examined the role of socioeconomic and sociodemographic factors in the nonadherence of underserved/uninsured women treated by Access to Breast and Cervical Cancer Care for West Texas (ABC4WT) in three regions with the goal of identifying barriers to screening and higher risk groups.

Phosphorus (P) is an important element in numerous metabolic reactions and signalling pathways, but the molecular details of these pathways remain largely unknown. In this study, physiological, transcriptome and metabolite analyses of apple leaves and roots were compared under different P conditions. The results showed that different P stresses influenced phenotypic characteristics, soil plant analytical development (SPAD) values and the contents of flavonoids and anthocyanins in apple seedlings.
