When the shoots of young hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) plants were cut off the roots, cultured as cuttings, and regenerating (adventitious) roots were removed as soon as appearing, ca. 80-90% of the plants became male (had staminate flowers) whereas if the roots were allowed to develop a similar percentage became female (pistillate flowers). Treatment of de-rooted cuttings with 6-benzylaminopurine (15 mg/l) restored the percent of female plants to ca. 80. It is suggested that the root system plays an essential role in sex expression in hemp and that this role is related to cytokinin synthesis in the root.

Context: Leukocytosis frequently noted in Cushing's syndrome (CS), along with other blood cell changes caused by direct and indirect cortisol effects.
Objective: Assess baseline white blood cell (WBC) profile in CS patients compared to controls and WBC changes pre- and post-remission after surgical treatment for CS.
Design: A comparative nationwide retrospective cohort study.

Vitiligo is a pigmentary disorder acquired and caused by the loss or destruction of melanocytes from the epidermis. There is strong proof that vitiligo is mainly an autoimmune disease. Cathelicidin (LL37), an antimicrobial polypeptide, is an important part of the innate immune system and has a role in different skin autoimmune diseases.

This study investigated the sexual dimorphism in right ventricle (RV) remodeling in right heart failure susceptible Fischer CDF rats using the pulmonary artery banding (PAB) model. Echocardiography and hemodynamic measurements were performed in adult male and female Fischer CDF rats at 1- or 2-weeks post-PAB. RV systolic pressure and RV hypertrophy were significantly elevated in PAB rats compared to sham control at 1- and 2-weeks post-PAB; however, no differences were observed between male and female rats.

The contribution of sex hormones to cardiovascular disease, including arterial stiffness, is established; however, the role of sex chromosome interaction with sex hormones, particularly in women, is lagging. Arterial structural stiffness depends on the intrinsic properties and transmural wall geometry that comprise a network of cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins expressed in a sex-dependent manner. In this study, we used four-core genotype (FCG) mice to determine the relative contribution of sex hormones versus sex chromosomes or their interaction with arterial structural stiffness.

In this study, we aimed to explore the sex-specific effects and mechanisms of sevoflurane exposure on the neural development of pubertal rats on the basis of M1/M2 microglial cell polarisation and related signalling pathways. A total of 48 rat pups (24 males and 24 females) were assigned to the 0- or 2-h sevoflurane exposure group on the seventh day after birth. The Morris water maze (MWM) test was subsequently conducted on the 32nd to 38th days after birth.
