Osteopetrosis is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by abnormal bone remodeling and increased bone density primarily due to defective osteoclast resorption. The diagnosis is based on a history of numerous fractures and radiological findings indicative of osteosclerosis, usually sufficient for a definitive diagnosis. We present a quite rare case of osteopetrosis complicated by recurrent episodes of maxillomandibular osteomyelitis associated with cutaneous fistulization and purulent nasal discharge. We used intravenous antibiotic therapy and necrotic bone debridement that prevented the appearance of acute infections over a 3-year follow-up, but the complete healing of the case was not achieved.

Article Synopsis
  • - Multiple myeloma (MM) is a rare cancer often treated with bisphosphonates, which help reduce bone loss and prevent complications, and this study focused on identifying imaging patterns related to this treatment in MM patients.
  • - The study reviewed six research articles involving 669 MM patients, of which 447 were treated with bisphosphonates like pamidronate and zoledronate; many patients developed medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), primarily affecting the mandible with specific radiographic features.
  • - The findings highlight distinct radiographic patterns of bone lesions in MM patients undergoing bisphosphonate therapy, which are important for early diagnosis and improving treatment outcomes.

Lower Insertional Torque of Fixation Screws for Mandibular Angle Fractures Is Associated With Complications.

J Oral Maxillofac Surg

July 2024

Assistant Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans, School of Dentistry, New Orleans, LA.

Background: Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a common treatment for mandibular angle fractures. It is unknown, however, whether the insertional torque of the fixation screws is a risk factor for postoperative complications.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the association between fixation screw insertional torque and postoperative inflammatory complications (POICs).

Appropriate management of lower 3rd molars is crucial to successful treatment of mandibular angle fractures. A unique case of a patient who presented for initial management of a left mandibular angle fracture with an unerupted lower 3rd molar was discussed in this study. After treatment with open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture, the lower 3rd molar erupted and the patient subsequently developed fungal osteomyelitis and hardware failure.

Osteomyelitis of the jaws: A retrospective series of 40 patients.

J Stomatol Oral Maxillofac Surg

October 2017

Department of stomatology and maxillofacial surgery, Pierre-et-Marie-Curie university Paris-6, Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital, Assistance publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, 47-83, boulevard de l'Hôpital, 75651 Paris cedex 13, France.

Introduction: The caseload of jaw osteomyelitis seem to have decreased considerably over the last fifty years thanks to the progress of oral hygiene, the appearance and the use of antibiotics, and early screening. 'Limited osteitis' remains frequent in general practice (alveolitis after dental extraction), but osteomyelitis is much rarer as evidenced by the lack of current literature and the low number of reported patients in the published series. The aim of this study was to analyze retrospectively all the cases of maxillo-mandibular osteomyelitis treated in a large academic department of Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery over a period of 6 years and to compare the results to data from the literature.
