All You Need to Know About Allometric Scaling: An Integrative Review on the Theoretical Basis, Empirical Evidence, and Application in Human Pharmacology.

Clin Pharmacokinet

December 2024

Division of Systems Pharmacology and Pharmacy, Leiden Academic Center for Drug Research, Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands.

Scaling approaches are used to describe or predict clearance for paediatric or obese populations from normal-weight adult values. Theoretical allometry assumes the existence of a universal bodyweight-based scaling relationship. Although theoretical allometry is highly disputed, it is commonly applied in pharmacological data analyses and clinical practice.

Socially driven negative feedback regulates activity and energy use in ant colonies.

PLoS Comput Biol

November 2024

Department of Biological Sciences, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey, United States of America.

Despite almost a century of research on energetics in biological systems, we still cannot explain energy regulation in social groups, like ant colonies. How do individuals regulate their collective activity without a centralized control system? What is the role of social interactions in distributing the workload amongst group members? And how does the group save energy by avoiding being constantly active? We offer new insight into these questions by studying an intuitive compartmental model, calibrated with and compared to data on ant colonies. The model describes a previously unexplored balance between positive and negative social feedback driven by individual activity: when activity levels are low, the presence of active individuals stimulates inactive individuals to start working; when activity levels are high, however, active individuals inhibit each other, effectively capping the proportion of active individuals at any one time.

High-Precision Calorimetry-Based Analysis of Pupal-Pharate Adult Development in .

Zoolog Sci

August 2024

Department of Biological Sciences, Graduate School of Science, Osaka University, Toyonaka 560-0043, Japan.

In holometabolous insects, the larval body is almost completely decomposed and reconstructed into the adult body during the pupal-pharate adult stages. Therefore, the total energetic cost of this process is a key thermodynamic quantity necessary for evaluating the benefit of their life history. Here, we measured whole-body thermal dissipation of single pupae of the fruit fly, , during the period from puparium formation to adult eclosion as a function of age, using a high-precision isothermal calorimeter at = 298 K.

A Nonlinear Dynamical View of Kleiber's Law on the Metabolism of Plants and Animals.

Entropy (Basel)

December 2023

Instituto de Física, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Apartado Postal 20-364, Mexico City 01000, Mexico.

Kleiber's empirical law, which describes that metabolism increases as the mass to the power 3/4, has arguably remained life sciences' enigma since its formal uncovering in 1930. Why is this behavior sustained over many orders of magnitude? There have been quantitative rationalizations put forward for both plants and animals based on realistic mechanisms. However, universality in scaling laws of this kind, like in critical phenomena, has not yet received substantiation.

Comparing the spreading characteristics of monkeypox (MPX) and COVID-19: Insights from a quantitative model.

Climate change is acknowledged to directly affect not only the environment, economy, and society but also the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases, thereby impacting public health. The recent experiences with the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and Monkeypox have highlighted the complex and interconnected nature of infectious diseases, which are strongly linked to various determinants of health. Considering these challenges, adopting a new vision such as the trans-disciplinary approach appears to be imperative.
