We report on the stepwise formation of N-doped nanohelicenes, nanographenes, nanodomes and graphenes from the same heteroaromatic precursor through subsequent dehydrogenations on Pt(111) upon thermal annealing. The combined experimental (UHV-STM) and computational (DFT) studies provide a full atomistic description of the intermediate reaction stages.

Carbon dots (CDs) are versatile nanomaterials that are considered ideal for application in bioimaging, drug delivery, sensing, and optoelectronics owing to their excellent photoluminescence, biocompatibility, and chemical stability features. Nitrogen doping enhances the fluorescence of CDs, alters their electronic properties, and improves their functional versatility. N-doped CDs can be synthesized via solvothermal treatment of carbon sources with nitrogen-rich precursors; however, systematic investigations of their synthesis mechanisms have been rarely reported.

Proton-electron transfer (PET) processes play a pivotal role in numerous electrochemical reactions; yet, effectively harnessing them remains a formidable challenge. Consequently, unveiling the PET pathway is imperative to elucidate the factors influencing the efficiency and selectivity of small molecule electrochemical conversion. In this study, a Zn-NC model catalyst with N and C vacancies was synthesized using a hydriding method to investigate the universal impact of PET on CO electroreduction.

Silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells, as one of the most promising passivated contact solar cell technologies of the next generation, have the advantages of high conversion efficiency, high open-circuit voltage, low-temperature coefficient, and no potential-induced degradation. For the single-side rear-emitter SHJ solar cells, the n-type carrier selective layer, which serves as the light-incident side, plays a pivotal role in determining the performance of heterojunction devices. Consequently, a superior n-doped layer should exhibit high optical transmittance and minimal optical absorption, along with a substantial effective doping level to guarantee the formation of dark conductivity (σ) and electron-transport capacity.

Despite the ultrahigh theoretical energy density and cost-effectiveness, aprotic lithium-oxygen (Li-O) batteries suffer from slow oxygen redox kinetics at cathodes and large voltage hysteresis. Here, we well-design ultrafine Co nanoparticles supported by N-doped mesoporous hollow carbon nanospindles (Co@HCNs) to serve as efficient electrocatalysts for Li-O battery. Benefiting from strong metal-support interactions, the obtained Co@HCNs manifest high affinity for the LiO intermediate, promoting formation of ultrathin nanosheet-like LiO with low-impedance contact interface on the Co@HCNs cathode surface, which facilitates the reversible decomposition upon charging.

Citrate is a potential biomarker for early stage detection of prostate cancer (PC), its concentration significantly dropped to 2-20 mM in PC patients. Herein, a cheap, simple, and reliable citrate sensor was proposed based on the biogenic synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) derived from the biowaste of Syzygiumcumini (S. cumini) seeds.
