A 40 year old woman who underwent combined heart-lung transplant for familial severe pulmonary hypertension experienced episodes of nonsustained ventricular tachycardia followed by sudden ventricular fibrillation arrest 8 days after transplant. Postarrest investigations revealed left lower lobe herniation into the right lower hemithorax, prompting emergent reoperation, and hernia reduction. Arrhythmias resolved following reduction of the herniated lung and facilitated rapid weaning from vasopressor and ventilatory support.

The respiratory control system exhibits neural plasticity, adjusting future ventilatory responses based on experience. We tested the hypothesis that ventilatory long-term facilitation induced by hypercapnic acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) at rest enhances subsequent ventilatory responses to steady-state exercise. Fourteen healthy adults (age = 27 ± 5 years; 7 males) participated in the study.

The utilization of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in complex thoracic surgery has become more frequent in recent years due to advances in technology, increased availability, and improved outcomes. ECMO has emerged as a vital tool to facilitate thoracic surgery for patients who would have otherwise been deemed unsuitable candidates. It has redefined the boundaries of surgical possibility where conventional methods fall short.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) fundamentally differ from tobacco cigarettes in their generation of liquid-based aerosols. Investigating how e-cig aerosols behave when inhaled into the dynamic environment of the lung is important for understanding vaping-related exposure and toxicity. A ventilated artificial lung model was developed to replicate the ventilatory and environmental features of the human lung and study their impact on the characteristics of inhaled e-cig aerosols from simulated vaping scenarios.
