Objective: Xenon and nitrous oxide have been shown to be neuroprotective in vivo and in vitro, but mainly in models of focal cerebral ischaemia. This study aimed to investigate whether the two gases are able to attenuate cerebral injury after global cerebral ischaemia.

Methods: Adult male Wistar rats underwent bilateral common carotid artery occlusion and were ventilated for 1 hour with 21% O₂/78% N₂. They were then randomized to three groups which continued to receive atmospheric air, 50% N2O/50% O₂ and 50% Xe/50% O₂ for an additional period of 45 minutes. The number of ischaemic neurons, the cortical volume loss and the immunochemical and molecular expression of c-fos and MMP-9 were evaluated.

Results: Xenon reduced the number of ischaemic neurons in the cortex and CA1 hippocampal region (p < 0.001) and decreased the cortical volume loss (p < 0.01). Immunochemical induction of c-fos in the cortex was significantly suppressed (p < 0.01) after administration of xenon. The molecular analysis revealed significant effects of N2O and xenon administration on c-fos and MMP-9 expression.

Conclusions: The data indicate that N2O and xenon administration is neuroprotective 1 hour after bilateral common carotid artery occlusion. These findings provide valuable evidence on the beneficial role of N2O and xenon in global cerebral injury.

Research progress of femoral head necrosis in HIV-infected patients.

Ann Med

December 2025

Department of Joint and Sports Medicine, Zhongnan Hospital, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China.

As life expectancy among patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) increases, a growing number of complications have been observed. This population displays an elevated risk of ischemic necrosis of the femoral head in comparison to the general population, which may be attributed to HIV infection, antiretroviral medication use, and hormone application. Patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who also have necrosis of the femoral head tend to present at an earlier age, with a rapid disease progression and a high incidence of bilateral onset.

Neuroinflammation immediately follows the onset of ischemic stroke in the middle cerebral artery. During this process, microglial cells are activated in and recruited to the penumbra. Microglial cells can be activated into two different phenotypes: M1, which can worsen brain injury; or M2, which can aid in long-term recovery.

Background And Objectives: Recently, reduction of transcallosal inhibition by contralateral navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (nrTMS) improved neurorehabilitation of glioma patients with new postoperative paresis. This multicentric study examines the effect of postoperative nrTMS in brain tumor patients to treat surgery-related upper extremity paresis.

Methods: This is a secondary analysis of two randomized and three one-arm studies in brain tumor patients with new/progressive postoperative paresis.

Post-stroke early activation of neutrophils contributes to intensive neuroinflammation and worsens disease outcomes. Other pre-existing patient conditions can modify the extent of their activation during disease, especially hypercholesterolemia. However, whether and how increased circulating cholesterol amounts can change neutrophil activation responses very early after stroke has not been studied.

Background: There are limited comparative data on real-world outcomes of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of the left main (LM) and non-LM coronary arteries.

Methods: 873 consecutive patients undergoing LM PCI (n=256) and non-LM PCI (n=617) were enrolled between September 2019-March 2023 in the Excellence in Coronary Artery Disease (XLCAD) Registry. Primary outcome was 1-year incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), a composite of all-cause death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, clinically driven repeat revascularization and ischemic stroke.
