Aims/hypothesis: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) features intrarenal inflammation, in which T cells play a part. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), a key transcription factor regulating cellular responses to hypoxia, is reportedly involved in the course of inflammation. The role of HIF-1α in DKD has been investigated, but the conclusions are controversial so far.

Heart failure (HF) is a conundrum in that, current therapies only slow the progression of the disease. We posit, if the causal mechanism were targeted, progression of the disease could be stopped and potentially reversed. We hypothesize that insufficient myocardial blood flow (MBF) produces minute areas of ischemia, that lead to an accumulating injury culminating in HF.

Introduction: Debate surrounding the use of cemented femoral components in hip arthroplasty persists. A proposed risk of cement fixation is bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS), a phenomenon characterized by intraoperative hypotension, hypoxia, and/or cardiovascular collapse. The purpose of this study was to analyze the literature to determine if enough evidence exists to support a causal relationship between cement and BCIS.

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) results in considerable mortality and neurodevelopmental disability, with a particularly high disease burden in low- and middle-income countries. Improved understanding of the pathophysiology underlying this injury could allow for improved diagnostic and therapeutic options. Specifically, hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF-1α and HIF-2α) likely play a key role, but that role is complex and remains understudied.

Background: von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) hereditary cancer syndrome is caused by mutations in the VHL tumor suppressor gene and is characterized by a predisposition to form various types of tumors, including renal cell carcinomas, hemangioblastomas, and pheochromocytomas. The protein products of the VHL gene, pVHL, are part of an ubiquitin ligase complex that tags hypoxia inducible factor alpha (HIF-α) for proteosomal degradation. pVHL has also been reported to bind to atypical protein kinase C (aPKC).
