The notion of mixed states is classically associated with descriptions and categories inherited from Kraepelin. However, simultaneous descriptions of depressive and manic manifestations can be traced back to ancient times. Semiology and definitions of these clinical associations have evolved across the times. We provide here a short insight on four distinct periods: Greek authors from ancient times, pre-Kraepelinian psychiatry (18th and 19th centuries), Kraepelin's conceptualization, and contemporary psychiatry (20th and 21st centuries).

Mountains with complex terrain and steep environmental gradients are biodiversity hotspots such as the eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, it is generally assumed that mountain terrain plays a secondary role in plant species assembly on a millennial time-scale compared to climate change. Obtaining a timescale for bacterial evolution is crucial to understand early life evolution but is difficult owing to the scarcity of bacterial fossils. Here, we introduce multiple new time constraints to calibrate bacterial evolution based on ancient symbiosis. This idea is implemented using a bacterial tree constructed with genes found in the mitochondrial lineages phylogenetically embedded within Proteobacteria.
