We report the fabrication and performance of a surface plasmon resonance aluminum nanohole array refractometric biosensor. An aluminum surface passivation treatment based on oxygen plasma is developed in order to circumvent the undesired effects of oxidation and corrosion usually found in aluminum-based biosensors. Immersion tests in deionized water and device simulations are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the passivation process. A label-free bioassay based on biotin analysis through biotin-functionalized dextran-lipase conjugates immobilized on the biosensor-passivated surface in aqueous media is performed as a proof of concept to demonstrate the suitability of these nanostructured aluminum films for biosensing.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanoparticles encapsulated with a lipid bilayer, and they constitute an excellent source of biomarkers for multiple diseases. However, the heterogeneity in their molecular compositions constitutes a major challenge for their recognition and profiling, thereby limiting their application as an effective biomarker. A single-EV analysis technique is crucial to both the discovery and the detection of EV subpopulations that carry disease-specific signatures.

Multi-scale structures are ubiquitous in biological systems. However, manufacturing man-made structures with controllable features spanning multiple length scales, particularly down to nanoscale features, is very challenging, which seriously impacts their collective properties. Here we introduce an aluminium-based three-dimensional lithography that combines sequential nano-micro-macro-imprinting and anodization of multi-scale anodic aluminium oxide templates to manufacture well-defined multi-scale structures, using various materials.

In this work, we have developed a fabrication method which allows fabrication of nanohole arrays in silver by use of a thin layer of aluminum oxide, which serves the dual purpose of both capping layer and hardmask for metal patterning. We demonstrate arrays of gold and silver mid-infrared plasmonic filters, fabricated on silicon, intended for use in optical filter blocks or for future integration with infrared imagers.

There is often a need to understand the physical origin of CD for different chiral metasurfaces, and to get guidelines for the design of structures with optimized and robust CD. In this work, we numerically study CD at normal incidence in square arrays of elliptic nanoholes etched in thin metallic layers (Ag, Au, Al) on a glass substrate and tilted with respect to the symmetry axes.

The light-matter interactions at nanoscale can be enhanced by Bloch-surface plasmon polariton (Bloch-SPP) on the plasmonic lattice. An Ag nanohole array in hexagonal arrangement served as an optical cavity to realize the directional and polarized amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) of R6G. A 100-fold enhanced ASE was observed at 15° emission angle under TM polarization when the pump power density exceeded the threshold of 198 W/cm based on the degenerated high state density modes.
