The reaction of 1,1-bis(triflyl)ethylene generated in situ with enolizable carbonyls yielded δ-oxo-1,1-bis(triflyl)alkane derivatives. Their acidities in both the gas and solution phases were determined.

Preoperative anemia is frequent and is associated with poor patient outcomes and higher transfusion rates. Perioperative blood transfusion is also associated with poor outcomes. These observations justify efforts to increase hemoglobin levels in anemic patients before surgeries with a moderate to high bleeding risk.

Iron deficiency, a pervasive global health issue, necessitates precise and reliable diagnostic methods, especially in clinical and surgical settings. This review examines an array of established markers of iron status, encapsulating parameters such as serum iron, ferritin, transferrin, and transferrin saturation alongside novel biomarkers like soluble transferrin receptor, zinc protoporphyrin, and hepcidin. We further scrutinise the potential and limitations of routine and novel diagnostic tools and strategies in distinguishing different anaemic conditions, such as iron deficiency anaemia, iron-restricted erythropoiesis, and anaemia of inflammation.

Objective: Neurocognitive (NC) impairment in people with HIV (PWH) is associated with erythrocyte indices, which may serve as indicators of iron metabolism, inflammation, and related factors. Erythropoiesis requires iron, regulated by a multifaceted system of peptide hormones, including hepcidin. This study postulated that hepcidin might modify the relationship between erythrocyte indices and NC performance in PWH.

Naturally occurring vitamin E is a lipophilic plant-derived molecule corresponding to the 2R forms of alpha-tocopherol. A series of natural analogs or tocochromanols are present in nature, including β-, γ- and δ-tocopherol (βT, γT, δT), the corresponding tocotrienols (αTE, βTE, γTE, δTE) and tocomonoenols. Differences between these analogs as lipophilic antioxidants and modulators of molecular processes suggest specific therapeutic properties against various disorders associated with acute and chronic inflammation.

Background: By simultaneously staining multiple immunomarkers on a single tissue section, multiplexed immunohistochemistry (mIHC) enhances the amount of information that can be observed in a single tissue section and thus can be a powerful tool to visualise cellular interactions directly in the tumour microenvironment. Performing mIHC remains technically and practically challenging, and this technique has many limitations if not properly validated. However, with proper validation, heterogeneity between histopathological images can be avoided.
