Fourteen children were studied with a 1Tesla scanner to assess the role of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in the recognition and evaluation of diastematomyelia and associated abnormalities. With MRI divided spinal cord was well imaged in its entire craniocaudal extent. Fibrous bands or bony septum when it contained a marrow cavity, were also well depicted. Direct visualization of the spinal cord itself is probably the most rewarding feature of MR imaging compared with other more conventional techniques. MR imaging demonstrated associated syringohydromyelia, segmentation anomalies, scoliosis, low position of the conus medularis and intradural lipoma that they were not detected with other radiologic studies.

Background: Myelomeningocele (MMC) is the most common type of congenital spinal malformation, typically requiring surgical intervention. While prenatal repair is increasingly favored, postnatal repair remains the standard in many settings. This study aims to evaluate the antibiotics prescribed to neonates with MMC and their correlation with central nervous system (CNS) infection rates following postnatal surgical repair.

Maternal exposures are known to influence the risk of isolated cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) - a common and highly heritable birth defect with a multifactorial etiology. To identify new CL/P risk loci, we conducted a genome-wide gene-environment interaction (GEI) analysis of CL/P on a sample of 540 cases and 260 controls recruited from the Philippines, incorporating the interaction effects of genetic variants with maternal smoking and vitamin use. As GEI analyses are typically low in power and the results can be difficult to interpret, we used multiple testing frameworks to evaluate potential GEI effects: 1 degree-of-freedom (1df) GxE test, the 3df joint test, and the two-step EDGE approach.

Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas; Division of Pediatric Surgery, Department of Surgery, Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas. Electronic address:

Introduction: We developed standardized electronic medical record templates (EMR-temp) for use in ambulatory prenatal surgical consultations for surgical fetal anomalies (SFAs). Our aim was to evaluate EMR-temp impact in provider documentation in prenatal care of SFA.

Methods: Prenatal consultations for SFAs at a single institution were retrospectively reviewed (2019-2022).

BACKGROUND Chiari malformation type 1 occurs when the cerebellar tonsils are pushed into the spinal canal, which can result in syringomyelia. This retrospective study from a single center evaluated outcomes in 89 patients with Chiari malformation type-I (CM-I) and syringomyelia treated with an arachnoid-preserving technique between 2016 and 2023. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted at a tertiary referral center, involving 88 adult patients and 1 adolescent patient aged 14 to 61 years, with diagnosis by MRI and treated for CM-I with syringomyelia between 2016 and 2023, using the arachnoid-preserving technique.

Brain herniation can be a life-threatening condition, resulting in poor prognosis and higher fatality rates. We examined whether quantitative characteristics of sequential pupillary light reflex (PLR) could serve as biomarkers for identifying brain herniation in fatal acute stroke cases with anterior circulation involvement admitted to neurological intensive care unit (Neuro-ICU). Automatic pupillometer assessed PLR automatically every 4-6 hours, measuring eight specific features: NPi (Neurological pupil index) score, initial resting and constriction pupil size, constriction change, constriction velocity, constriction latency, and dilation velocity.
