Objective: To estimate the proportion of time the vaccines in the cold-chain system in India are exposed to temperatures of < 0 or > 8 °C.
Methods: In each of 10 states, the largest district and the one most distant from the state capital were selected for study. Four boxes, each containing an electronic temperature recorder and two vials of diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus vaccine, were placed in the state or regional vaccine store for each study state. Two of these boxes were then shipped - one per facility - towards the two most peripheral health facilities where vaccine was stored in each study district. The boxes were shipped, handled and stored as if they were routine vaccine supplies.
Findings: In state, regional and district vaccine stores and peripheral health facilities, respectively, the temperatures in the boxes exceeded 8 °C for 14.3%, 13.2%, 8.3% and 14.7% of their combined storage times and fell below 0 °C for 1.5%, 0.2%, 0.6% and 10.5% of these times. The boxes also spent about 18% and 7% of their combined times in transit at < 0 and > 8 °C, respectively. In shake tests conducted at the end of the study, two thirds of the vaccine vials in the boxes showed evidence of freezing.
Conclusion: While exposure to temperatures above 8 °C occurred at every level of vaccine storage, exposure to subzero temperatures was only frequent during vaccine storage at peripheral facilities and vaccine transportation. Systematic efforts are needed to improve temperature monitoring in the cold-chain system in India.

This study aimed to investigate the influence of heterogeneous amylopectin (waxy corn starch, WCS) on the retrogradation of wheat starch (WS), hoping to provide a new idea for alleviating the retrogradation of steamed cold noodles. The chain length distribution data confirmed the formation of a binary gel network resulting from the heterogeneous amylopectin structure between WCS and WS. With the increase of WCS concentration, the modulus and setback value of WS-WCS binary gel decreased, which was attributed to the newly built network structure hindering the aggregation of WS molecules.

This article presents the development of a resistive frost-detection sensor fabricated using Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) with a conductive filament. This sensor was designed to enhance demand-defrost control in industrial refrigeration systems. Frost accumulation on evaporator surfaces blocks airflow and creates a thermal insulating barrier that reduces heat exchange efficiency, increasing energy consumption and operational costs.

Accurate estimation of interfacial tension (IFT) between nitrogen and crude oil during nitrogen-based gas injection into oil reservoirs is imperative. The previous research works dealing with prediction of IFT of oil and nitrogen systems consider synthetic oil samples such n-alkanes. In this work, we aim to utilize eight machine learning methods of Decision Tree (DT), AdaBoost (AB), Random Forest (RF), K-nearest Neighbors (KNN), Ensemble Learning (EL), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Multilayer Perceptron Artificial Neural Network (MLP-ANN) to construct data-driven intelligent models to predict crude oil - nitrogen IFT based upon experimental data of real crude oils samples encountered in underground oil reservoirs.

Conventional electronic chip packaging generates a huge thermal resistance due to the low thermal conductivity of the packaging materials that separate chip dies and coolant. Here we propose and fabricate a closed high-conducting heat chip package based on passive phase change, using silicon carbide which is physically and structurally compatible with chip die materials. Our "chip on vapor chamber" (CoVC) concept realizes rapid diffusion of hot spots, and eliminates the high energy consumption of refrigeration ordinarily required for heat management.

This article introduces an innovative multipurpose system that integrates a solar power plant with a coastal wind farm to generate refrigeration for refinery processes and industrial air conditioning. The system comprises multiple wind turbines, solar power plants, the Kalina cycle to provide partial energy for the absorption refrigeration cycle used in industrial air conditioning, and a compression refrigeration cycle for propane gas liquefaction. An extensive energy and exergy analysis was conducted on the proposed system, considering various thermodynamic parameters such as the solar power plant's energy output, the absorption chiller's cooling load, the electricity generated by the turbines, the wind turbines' power output, and the energy efficiency and exergy of each cycle within the system.
