CKMT1 deficiency contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction and promotes intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis via reverse electron transfer-derived ROS in colitis.

National Clinical Research Center for Digestive Diseases, Department of Gastroenterology, Changhai Hospital, Naval Medical University, Shanghai, China.

Mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). As a mitochondrial isozyme of creatine kinases, which control energy metabolism, CKMT1 is thought to be a critical molecule in biological processes. However, the specific role of CKMT1 in intestinal inflammation remains largely unknown.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the sixth most common cancer globally. Patient survival varies depending on tumour stage and oral cavity subsites. Buccal mucosa neoplasia is rare and burdened by worse prognosis than other oral subsites, showing a high rate of loco-regional relapses within six months after treatment.

Probiotic Bifidobacterium bifidum strains desialylate MUC13 and increase intestinal epithelial barrier function.

Sci Rep

March 2025

Department of Biomolecular Health Sciences, Division Infectious Diseases and Immunology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Probiotic bacteria including Bifidobacterial species have the capacity to improve intestinal health, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are often not understood. Bifidobacteria are considered keystone species but have a relatively low abundance in the adult intestinal tract. Bifidobacterium colonization depends on degradation of host-derived carbohydrates, including human milk oligosaccharides and mucin-associated oligosaccharides.

Transport mechanisms of pesticide mixtures impairing intestinal barrier function in mice.

Multiple pesticide residues in the diet can be ingested through the intestine; however, the interactions affecting intestinal health remain unclear. Histopathological analysis of mouse intestines revealed synergistic damage in those exposed to a binary mixture of abamectin, fluazinam, and spirodiclofen. The combined exposure to fluazinam and spirodiclofen resulted in a 73.

Dietary protein absorption in neonatal mammals and fishes relies on the function of a specialized and conserved population of highly absorptive lysosome-rich enterocytes (LREs). The gut microbiome has been shown to enhance absorption of nutrients, such as lipids, by intestinal epithelial cells. However, whether protein absorption is also affected by the gut microbiome is poorly understood.
