Background: Understanding the spatial disposition of fiber bundles is a requisite for efficient operative planning in cerebral surgery, respecting the most eloquent structures even when not seen by the naked eye.

Aim: In this study, we used fiber dissection to demonstrate critical relationships between the lateral ventricles and white matter fasciculi.

Method: Twenty cerebral hemispheres obtained from body donation were used to study the lateral ventricles, white matter tracts, and their anatomical relationships.

Genetic instability in HSPC subpopulations of umbilical cord blood from patients with childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Sci Rep

Department of Radiobiology, Cancer Research Institute, Biomedical Research Center, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Dubravska Cesta 9, 845 05, Bratislava, Slovakia.

Preleukemic stem cells (PSC) containing preleukemic fusion genes (PFG) arise prenatally and represent the initial stage of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) development. Despite widespread efforts, the cell of origin of PFG is still unclear. For the first time, in order to identify the immunophenotype of the PSCs, different subpopulations of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) of umbilical cord blood (UCB) from ALL pediatric patients and control healthy children were sorted and analyzed for the presence of diagnostically-relevant PFGs by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH).

B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemias (B-ALLs) harbor recurrent chromosomal aberrations associated with prognostic and therapeutic significance. Although these major driver genetic abnormalities are generally mutually exclusive, they are rarely reported to co-occur. Here, we present the case of a child with B-ALL who suffered two relapses with short event-free intervals.
