Zinc oxysulfide nanocrystals with zinc blende phase are synthesized through a wet-chemical method. An affirmation of the crystal structure, elemental homogeneity and phase transformation is obtained by X-ray diffraction and authenticated by electron micrographic studies. Theoretical observations have strongly supported the thermodynamic solubility limit for its (30%) formation. An anomalous bandgap bowing with modulation in bandgap from 3.74 eV (ZnO) to 3.93 eV (ZnS) was observed with a minimum bandgap of 2.7 eV. Tunable bandgap and a wide range of visible emission ascertain it as a potential material for optoelectronic and solar cell applications due to its large bandgap offsets.

In this work, electrospun nanofiber embedded with zinc oxysulfide (Zn(O,S)) has been demonstrated as an efficient and robust photocatalyst for hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline under solar light irradiation at mild conditions with methanol as the hole scavenger. The solid solution state of Zn(O,S) in electrospun nanofiber was successfully revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses in which the lattice fringes and diffraction planes located in between those of ZnO and ZnS phases. Moreover, the electrochemical and optical properties of Zn(O,S) embedded in polyethylene oxide (PEO) nanofiber are found to be better than those of ZnO and ZnS indicating more efficient photocatalytic activities as well.

Recently, the simulation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) via SCAPS-1D has been widely reported. In this study, we adopted SCAPS-1D as a simulation tool for the numerical simulation of lead-free (Pb-free) PSCs. We used methyl ammonium germanium iodide (MAGeI) as a light absorber, zinc oxysulphide (ZnOS) as an electron transport layer (ETL), and spiro-OMeTAD as a hole transport layer.

Bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells have received a great deal of attention mainly due to the possibility of higher power conversion efficiency for photovoltaic applications. Therefore, in this study, relatively novel polymer BHJ solar cells are proposed (ITO/ETL/PTB7:PCBM/PEDOT:PSS/Au) with various electron transport layers (ETL) such as zinc oxysulfide (Zn(O,S)), zinc selenide (ZnSe), and poly[(9,9-bis(3'-((N,N-dimethyl)-N-ethylammonium)-propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] dibromide (PFN-Br). Here, each ETL material is selected based on the energy bandgap compatibility with ITO as well as the PTB7:PCBM active layer and is based on other physical properties, which are generally required for efficient photovoltaic responses.

The two-stage technology of porous carbonaceous material obtained via pyrolysis in inert medium with subsequent activation by steam is well known. While steam could be a suitable substance for pyrolysis as well, single-staged technology for waste tire recycling is yet to be developed. A comparative analysis of the characteristics of the carbonaceous materials obtained by the single-staged steam pyrolysis of waste tires was carried out, which could provide a theoretical background for the development of such technology.
