We derive a closed-form expression for the phase shift experienced by (1+1)-dimensional kinks colliding at ultrarelativistic velocities (γv>>1), valid for arbitrary periodic potentials. Our closed-form expression is the leading-order result of a more general scattering theory of solitary waves described in a related paper [Phys. Rev. D 88, 105024 (2013)]. This theory relies on a small kinematic parameter 1/(γv)<<1 rather than a small parameter in the Lagrangian. Our analytic results can be directly extracted from the Lagrangian without solving the equation of motion. Based on our closed-form expression, we prove that kink-kink and kink-antikink collisions have identical phase shifts at leading order.

Nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) incorporating atomic or molecular layer van der Waals materials can support multimode resonances and exotic nonlinear dynamics. Here we investigate nonlinear coupling of closely spaced modes in a bilayer (2L) molybdenum disulfide (MoS) nanoelectromechanical resonator. We model the response from a drumhead resonator using equations of two resonant modes with a dispersive coupling term to describe the vibration induced frequency shifts that result from the induced change in tension.

Motivation: In cine MRI, the measurements within each timeframe alone are too noisy for image reconstruction. Some information must be 'borrowed' from other time frames and the reconstruction algorithm is a slow iterative procedure.
Goals: We set up a constrained objective function, which uses the measurements at other time frames to regularize the image reconstruction.

Super-hydrophobic and liquid-repellent surfaces can be characterized experimentally in tensile adhesion experiments with the force (FAdh) required to detach a droplet from such surfaces, but analytical expressions that relate FAdh to the surface energy, w, are still missing. In this work, we derive analytical expressions for FAdh between droplets or radius r and super-hydrophobic surfaces on which the contact angle is greater than 150°. By applying the general condition for the onset of instability in different mechanical configurations, we find FAdh = -πwr and FAdh ≈ -(4/5)πwr, for the fixed-force and fixed-grip configurations, respectively, as well as other expressions that depend on the ratio of the spring constant of a generic force measuring apparatus to the surface tension of the liquid composing the droplet.

The length of actin filaments is regulated by the combined action of hundreds of actin-binding proteins. While the roles of individual proteins are well understood, how they combine to regulate actin dynamics in vivo remains unclear. Recent advances in microscopy have enabled precise, high-throughput measurements of filament lengths over time.

We investigate random searches under stochastic position resetting at rate r, in a bounded 1D environment with space-dependent diffusivity D(x). For arbitrary shapes of D(x) and prescriptions of the associated multiplicative stochastic process, we obtain analytical expressions for the average time T for reaching the target (mean first-passage time), given the initial and reset positions, in good agreement with stochastic simulations. For arbitrary D(x), we obtain an exact closed-form expression for T, within a Stratonovich scenario, while for other prescriptions, like Itô and anti-Itô, we derive asymptotic approximations for small and large rates r.
