Well-ordered, one-dimensional H2Ti2O5, H2Ti8O17, TiO2-B, and anatase TiO2/TiO2-B nanowire arrays were innovatively designed and directly grown on current collectors as high performance three dimensional (3D) anodes for binder and carbon free lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The prepared thin nanowires exhibited a single crystalline phase with highly uniform morphologies, diameters ranging from 70-80 nm, and lengths of around 15 μm. Specifically, reversible Li insertion and extraction reactions around 1.6-1.8 V with initial intercalation capacities of 326 and 271 mA h g(-1) at a cycling rate of 0.1 C (where 1 C = 335 mA g(-1)) were observed for H2Ti8O17 and TiO2-B nanowire arrays, respectively. Among the four compounds investigated, the H2Ti8O17 nanowire electrode demonstrated optimal cycling stability, delivering a high specific discharge capacity of 157.8 mA h g(-1) with a coulombic efficiency of 100%, even after the 500th cycle at a current rate of 1 C. Furthermore, the H2Ti8O17 nanowire electrode displayed superior rate performance with rechargeable discharge capacities of 127.2, 111.4, 87.2, and 73.5 mA h g(-1) at 5 C, 10 C, 20 C, and 30 C, respectively. These results present the potential opportunity for the development of high-performance LIBs based on nanostructured Ti-based anode materials in terms of high stability and high rate capability.

The cadmium-rich intermetallic compounds RhCd ( = Ca, Sr, Y, La-Nd, Sm-Lu) were synthesized from the elements in sealed tantalum tubes. The elements were reacted in an induction furnace and the samples were post-annealed to increase phase purity and crystallinity. The RhCd phases crystallize with the cubic CeCrAl type structure, space group 3̄.

A squaramide-based monomer, designed for topochemical azide-alkyne cycloaddition (TAAC) polymerization, crystallizes as two polymorphs, M1 and M2, both having crystal packing suitable for topochemical polymerization. The hydrogen-bonding between squaramide units bias the molecular organization in both the polymorphs. 3D packing of H-bonded stacks of monomer lead to juxtaposition of azide and alkyne units of adjacent molecules in a transition-state-like arrangement for their regiospecific cycloaddition reaction.

Due to a lack of spatially resolved characterization studies on statistical and individual particle microstructure at multiple scales, a knowledge gap exists in understanding the mechanistic link between rapid performance failure and atomic-scale structure degradation in single-crystalline Ni-rich battery cathodes. In a recent publication in , Huang developed a multi-crystal rocking curve technique (combining X-ray and electron microscopy to capture both statistical and individual lattice distortions), which enables multiscale observations and further proves that the accumulation of the unrecoverable lattice rotation in cathodes upon repeated cycling exacerbates mechanical failure and electrochemical decay. The elucidation of failure mechanisms in single-crystalline cathodes offers valuable insights into the development of long-lasting and high-energy-density cathodes in next-generation batteries, encompassing strategies to mitigate lattice rotation and enhance lattice structure tolerance against lattice distortion within individual particles.

Flexible covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer distinct advantages in elasticity and adaptability over rigid COFs, but these benefits often come at the expense of crystallinity due to challenges in polymerization, complicating both synthesis and structural characterization. Current research primarily employs single flexible monomers, which limits the tunability of these frameworks. In this study, we introduce two highly crystalline, flexible COFs, ZCST-102 and ZCST-103, constructed from dual flexible monomers.

Van der Waals (vdW) dielectrics are extensively employed to enhance the performance of 2D electronic devices. However, current vdW dielectric materials still encounter challenges such as low dielectric constant (κ) and difficulties in synthesizing high-quality single crystals. 2D rare-earth oxyhalides (REOXs) with exceptional electrical properties present an opportunity for the exploration of novel high-κ dielectrics.
