Objective: This study was performed to compare the expression of CD44 in endometrial stromal cells (ESCs) of women with and without endometriosis and to evaluate the role of CD44 in the adherence of ESCs to peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs).
Methods: A PMC adherence assay was performed to evaluate the adherence of ESCs to PMCs in women with and without endometriosis. The expression of CD44 mRNA was measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. CD44 protein was evaluated by Western blot analysis.
Results: There were no significant differences in the expression of CD44 mRNA and protein in ESCs or in the binding of ESCs to PMCs between patients with endometriosis and controls. Although the expression of CD44 protein was decreased in both women with endometriosis and controls after anti-CD44 antibody treatment, there was no effect on binding of ESCs to PMCs. Treatment of ESCs with peritoneal fluid from endometriosis patients resulted in a significant increase in binding of ESCs to PMCs compared to untreated ESCs in the endometriosis group.
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the expression of CD44 protein in ESCs from women with endometriosis might not be directly associated with adherence to PMCs.

Background And Aims: Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) is one of the leading causes of severe liver disease with limited pharmacological treatments for alcohol-related steatohepatitis (ASH). CD44, a glycoprotein mainly expressed in immune cells, has been implicated in multiple inflammatory diseases but has never been studied in the ALD context. We therefore studied its contribution to ASH development in mice and its expression in ALD patients.

Background: Most patients with prostate cancer inevitably progress to castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), at which stage chemotherapeutics like docetaxel become the first-line treatment. However, chemotherapy resistance typically develops after an initial period of therapeutic efficacy. Increasing evidence indicates that cancer stem cells confer chemotherapy resistance via exosomes.

Microthrombus formation is associated with COVID-19 severity; however, the detailed mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we investigated mouse models with severe pneumonia caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection by using our in vivo two-photon imaging system. In the lungs of SARS-CoV-2-infected mice, increased expression of adhesion molecules in intravascular neutrophils prolonged adhesion time to the vessel wall, resulting in platelet aggregation and impaired lung perfusion.

Metastasis and recurrence are the primary obstacles to long-term survival in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. In this study, we employed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to comprehensively delineate the transcriptomic landscape of primary and liver metastatic CRCs, and revealed novel cellular crosstalk between cancer cell subpopulation and myofibroblastic CAFs (myCAFs) at single-cell resolution. We identified a cancer cell subpopulation termed stem/transient amplifying-like (stem/TA-like) cells, which expressed genes associated with stem cell-like characteristics and metastatic potential.

Parietal Epithelial Cells (PECs) activation and proliferation are common to several distinct forms of glomerulopathies. Due to several stimuli, PECs can change to a progenitor (CD24 and CD133/2) or a pro-sclerotic (CD44) phenotype. In addition, PECs, which are constantly exposed to filtered albumin, are known to be involved in albumin internalization, but how this mechanism occurs is unknown.
