A compact scheme for photonic generation of a phase-coded microwave signal using a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DMZM) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed scheme, the radio frequency (RF) carrier and the coding signal are sent to the two RF ports of the DMZM, respectively. By properly setting the amplitude of the coding signal and the bias voltage of the DMZM, an exact π-phase-shift phase-coded microwave signal is generated. The proposed scheme has a simple structure since only a single DMZM is required. In addition, good frequency tunability is achieved because no frequency-dependent electrical devices or wavelength-dependent optical devices are applied. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is verified by experiment. 2 or 2.5 Gb/s phase-coded 10 and 20 GHz microwave signals are successfully generated.

An approach for generating phase-coded coherent microwave pulse trains at high frequencies is proposed and demonstrated based on an actively mode-locked optoelectronic parametric oscillator (AML-OEPO), where an electrical mixer is inserted into the cavity of an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) to achieve both mode locking and parameter oscillation. The driving signal applied to the mixer is a low-frequency sinusoidal signal with voltage polarity coding, where the frequency is the same as the free spectral range (FSR) of the OEO cavity, and the duration of each voltage polarity coding bit is identical to the loop delay. As a result, phase-coded coherent microwave pulse trains can be generated, where the pulse interval is equal to the loop delay due to the active mode locking effect, and the phase coding period is equal to a multiple integer of the loop delay due to parameter oscillation.

We report a photonic approach to generate background-free multi-format dual-band microwave signals based on a single modulator, which is suitable for high-precision and fast detection of radars in complex electromagnetic environments. By applying different radio-frequency signals and electrical coding signals to the polarization-division multiplexing Mach-Zehnder modulator (PDM-MZM), the generation of dual-band dual-chirp signals or dual-band phase-coded pulse signals centered at 10 and 15.5 GHz is experimentally demonstrated.

A photonics-assisted binary/quaternary phase-coded microwave signal generator with fundamental/doubling reconfigurable carrier frequency applicable to digital I/O interfaces is proposed and has been verified by experiments. This scheme is based on a cascade modulation scheme, which is used to reconfigure fundamental/doubling carrier frequency and load the phase-coded signal, respectively. By controlling the radio frequency (RF) switch and the bias voltages of the modulator, the switching of the fundamental or doubling carrier frequency can be realized.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic sampling-enabled multi-band microwave signals generation scheme. The intermediate-frequency input signal is up-converted to high frequency output signals in multiple frequency bands, after being optically sampled by an ultra-short optical pulse train and subsequently being detected by a photodetector (PD). The ultra-short pulse source, realized by using an electro-optic modulation-based time lens with the chirp compensation, can be flexibly adjusted to enhance the performance of multi-band frequency up-conversion.

A scheme for binary phase-coded microwave signal generation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated with a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM). The carrier of the generated phase-coded signal is provided by the built-in dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on the DPMZM. The principle of this signal generator and the oscillating condition of the OEO is theoretically described in detail.
