A microwave photonics phase detector is conceived and practically demonstrated. The phase-detector system employs a semiconductor optical amplifier as a four-wave mixer to enable phase detection over a broad frequency range. The system behavior is first mathematically modeled and then demonstrated practically. Phase measurement over a frequency range of 1-18 GHz is achieved. This phase detector is an excellent candidate for wideband applications such as frequency-agile radar.

The albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score was recently used to predict hepatic reserve. This score is a continuous variable that is used to determine cutoff values and is easily calculated from albumin and bilirubin levels alone. The quantitation of the major capsid protein L1 is an important metric during the pharmaceutical manufacturing of human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccines, as they are critical components of virus like particles (VLPs) that form the core of the drug product. During the production of VLPs, the L1 protein is present in multiple states, including monomer, multimer, fully formed VLPs and aggregate species, whose expression levels provides an important read-out of upstream productivity and downstream purification efficiency through the measurement of step yields. However, quantitation of total L1 protein is challenging not only due to its presence in multiple states, but also due to the matrix complexity and purification stage of the samples, which spans complex cell lysate to cleaner post purification material.

We introduce an ultrasensitive interferometric protocol that combines weak value amplification (WVA) with traditional interferometry. This protocol WVA+interferometry uses weak value amplification of the relative delay between two paths to enhance interferometric sensitivity. As an example, we demonstrate a proof-of-principle experiment that achieves few-attosecond timing resolution (few nanometer path length resolution) with a double-slit interferometer using only common optical components.

The ringdown phase following a binary black hole coalescence is a powerful tool for measuring properties of the remnant black hole. Future gravitational wave detectors will increase the precision of these measurements and may be sensitive to the environment surrounding the black hole. However, due to the high peak power of optical pulses, the received power of the detector is severely limited, and thus the sensitivity of the system is reduced. To address this problematic issue, this paper presents a multichannel parallel high-saturation optical power-balanced photodetection technique that uses parallel reception to enhance the detector's received power, thereby improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and system sensitivity.
