We propose and experimentally demonstrate a method that is capable of resolving both real and imaginary parts of third-order nonlinearity (χ(3)) in the vicinity of Raman resonances. Dispersion of χ(3) can be obtained from a medium probed within microscopic volumes with a spectral resolution of better than 0.10 cm(-1).

Metacavities by harnessing the linear-crossing metamaterials.

Nanophotonics

January 2025

MOE Key Laboratory of Advanced Micro-Structured Materials, School of Physics Science and Engineering Tongji University, Shanghai 200092, China.

The formed optical cavity mode intensively relies on the size and geometry of optical cavity. When the defect or impurity exists inside the cavity, the formed cavity mode will be destroyed. Here, we propose a metacavity consisting of arrays of linear-crossing metamaterials (LCMMs) with abnormal dispersion, where each LCMM offers both the directional propagation channel for all incident angles and the negative refraction across its neighboring LCMMs.

Carving Metal-Organic-Framework Glass Based Solid-State Electrolyte Via a Top-Down Strategy for Lithium-Metal Battery.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

KU Leuven, Materials engineering, Kasteelpark Arenberg 44 bus 2450, 3001 LEUVEN Belgium, LEUVEN, BELGIUM.

Traditional polymer solid electrolytes (PSEs) suffer from low Li conductivity, poor kinetics and safety concerns. Here, we present a novel porous MOF glass gelled polymer electrolyte (PMG-GPE) prepared via a top-down strategy, which features a unique three-dimensional interconnected graded-aperture structure for efficient ion transport. Comprehensive analyses, including time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), Solid-state 7Li magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR), Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations, and electrochemical tests, quantify the pore structures, revealing their relationship with ion conductivity that increases and then decreases as macropore proportion rises.

Antimicrobial Polymer via ROMP of a Bioderived Tricyclic Oxanorbornene Lactam Derivative.

ACS Appl Bio Mater

January 2025

Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e.V., Hohe Straße 6, 01069 Dresden, Germany.

The rapid emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria represents a critical global health threat, underscoring the urgent need for alternative antimicrobial strategies beyond conventional antibiotics. In this study, we report the synthesis of novel biobased antimicrobial polymers bearing quaternary ammonium salts, derived from sustainable feedstocks, maleic anhydride, dimethylaminobenzaldehyde, and furfurylamine. The functional tricyclic oxanorbornene lactam monomer is polymerized via ring opening metathesis polymerization, yielding well-defined polymers with controlled molar masses and low dispersity.

SKL of Marine Food Processing & Safety Control, National Engineering Research Center of Seafood, Collaborative Innovation Center of Seafood Deep Processing, Liaoning Province Key Laboratory for Marine Food Science and Technology, School of Food Science and Technology, Dalian Polytechnic University, Dalian, China.

Background: Traditional methods for fabricating protein-polyphenol conjugates have not preserved the structural and functional integrity essential for the food industry effectively. This research introduces an advanced encapsulation methodology designed to overcome these limitations, with the potential to enhance the stability of edible oil matrices significantly, leading to improved preservation techniques and extended shelf life.

Results: Glycated pea protein isolate-curcumin conjugates (gPPI-CUR) were developed, demonstrating a marked improvement in the oxidative stability of walnut oil (WO), a proxy for edible oil matrices.

Characterization of Photo-Cross-Linked Polyethylene Pipes for Geothermal Energy Storage.

ACS Omega

January 2025

Swedish Centre for Resource Recovery, Faculty of Textiles, Engineering and Business, University of Borås, 501 90 Boras, Sweden.

This study investigates the morphology and thermo-mechanical properties of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipes for potential use in high-temperature borehole thermal energy storage systems. Particular attention is given to a novel type of PEX pipe produced through photoinitiated cross-linking (PEX-e). Two formulations, PEX-e1 and PEX-e2, were analyzed and compared to peroxide-cross-linked polyethylene (PEX-a) and non-cross-linked bimodal polyethylene (PE100) pipes.
