We study the optical far-field and near-field characteristics, and the optical force effects of plasmonic disk-ring nanostructures. There are multiple Fano features resulting from the scattering interferences of the hybridized modes from the disk's dipole and the ring's higher-order modes. In particular, it is found that the optical binding force between the disk and the ring shows multiple sign reversals spectrally, from the dipole-quadrupole regime up to the dipole-decapole regime. We show that the zero-force points can be categorized into two types: the positive-to-negative ones resulting from the Fano dip and the negative-to-positive ones associated with the transitions between dipole-multipole modes. The multiple sign reversals of the optical forces are tunable by the geometrical size and gap of the disk and ring. Such characters make it possible to organize unusual optical matters from individual plasmonic nanoparticles.

Many marine organisms feature sensitive sensory-perceptual systems to sense the surrounding environment and respond to disturbance with intense bioluminescence. However, it remains a great challenge to develop artificial materials that can sense external disturbance and simultaneously activate intense luminescence, although such materials are attractive for visual sensing and intelligent displays. Herein, we present a new class of bioinspired smart gels constructed by integrating hydrophilic polymeric networks, metastable supersaturated salt and fluorophores containing heterogenic atoms.

The encapsulation of viologen derivatives in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to construct host-guest materials has been widely discussed owing to their distinctive spatial arrangement and physical/chemical properties. Herein, three new photochromic MOFs (NWM-1-3) have been successfully synthesized by 1,1,2,2-Tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene (H4TCPE) ligand as well as three different viologen derivatives based on host-guest strategy. Remarkably, NWM-1-3 exhibit a notable reversible photochromism change from yellow to green under 365 nm UV irradiation.

Colour vision defects (CVDs) can be both congenital and acquired, with acquired dyschromatopsia often associated with medication toxicity. This review explores various standardised colour vision tests used to detect these defects, including the Ishihara plate test, Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test, and anomaloscopes. These methods are evaluated for their effectiveness in diagnosing CVDs, particularly in acquired conditions.

Nanoscale photoswitchable proteins could facilitate precise spatiotemporal control of transmembrane communication and support studies in synthetic biology, neuroscience and bioelectronics. Here, through covalent modification of the α-haemolysin protein pore with arylazopyrazole photoswitches, we produced 'photopores' that transition between iontronic resistor and diode modes in response to irradiation at orthogonal wavelengths. In the diode mode, a low-leak OFF-state nanopore exhibits a reversible increase in unitary conductance of more than 20-fold upon irradiation at 365 nm.
