Objectives: To describe a novel technique for removal of embedded distal airway foreign bodies with emphasis on procedural steps and management.

Methods: The proximal bronchoplasty retrieval (PBR) technique is described including indications, rationale, surgical technique, and clinical decision making. Two representative cases are described in detail in order to demonstrate the technique.

Results: The PBR technique was successfully used to remove the two described embedded distal airway foreign bodies after other attempts had failed.

Conclusion: Airway foreign bodies which have been present for several days or weeks are associated with edema and granulation tissue which often embeds the foreign body and may prevent removal due to proximal airway narrowing. We present a novel technique using endoscopic balloon dilation bronchoplasty to enlarge the airway proximal to the foreign body and enable removal with two example cases presented herein. The PBR technique allowed for removal of otherwise "stuck" distal airway foreign bodies.

Thermal burns of the larynx are uncommon but can lead to serious upper airway obstruction due to edema and bleeding, especially in children who may struggle to communicate their symptoms effectively. This report presents the case of a one-year-and-seven-month-old boy who developed stridor and respiratory distress after eating a heated potato, which ultimately required tracheal intubation. The initial evaluation suggested foreign body aspiration; however, laryngoscopy confirmed significant arytenoid swelling and airway narrowing due to thermal burns.

Introduction: Foreign body (FB) inhalation is a potentially life-threatening condition in children. Magnets, being rare, aspirated objects, pose significant threat due to their physical and magnetic properties.

Case Presentation: A 10-year-old girl with a history of magnet aspiration went into respiratory distress due to dislodgement of magnet to opposite main bronchus following failed attempt of removal via Rigid Bronchoscopy.

Background: The indications for pediatric airway endoscopy are expanding and a variety of therapeutic interventions are feasible for central airway obstruction (CAO) and other central airway pathologies, apart from foreign body removal.

Methods: In this retrospective chart review from four centers, we describe the indications, procedures, outcomes, and complications of therapeutic bronchoscopic interventions in children for non foreign-body removal indications.

Results: A total of 72 children (mean age:140 [60.

Article Synopsis
  • Tracheostomy tubes increase the risk of respiratory infections, and initial treatment often involves nebulized tobramycin, but there’s a lack of standardized treatment guidelines.
  • A study used a breathing simulator to test how much tobramycin reaches simulated children with tracheostomies, comparing delivery methods and doses for different child weights.
  • Results showed that jet nebulizers delivered significantly more tobramycin than vibrating mesh nebulizers, highlighting the need for better dosing strategies and further research on drug delivery efficiency and higher dosages for this patient group.

Acute Tracheal Obstruction Secondary to Cervical Liposarcoma Metastasis.

Provincial Higher Medical College, North Sichuan Medical College, Nanchong, Sichuan Province, China.

Tracheal obstruction can arise from multiple conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, foreign bodies, tumors, and acute heart failure. We report a case of a 43-year-old man with cervical liposarcoma who, following surgical excision, chemotherapy, and radiation, presented with severe dyspnea and was admitted to our hospital. A CT scan detected an endotracheal mass causing significant obstruction, suspected to be malignant.
