The ion binding to the lipid/water interface can substantially influence the structural, functional, and dynamic properties of the cell membrane. Despite extensive research on ion-lipid interactions, the specific effects of ion binding on the polarity and hydration at the lipid/water interface remain poorly understood. This study explores the influence of three biologically relevant divalent cations─Mg, Ca, and Zn─on the depth-dependent interfacial polarity and hydration of zwitterionic DPPC lipid in its gel phase at room temperature.

Readily available animal tissue, such as ground beef, is a convenient material to represent the dielectric properties of biological tissue when validating microwave imaging and sensing hardware and techniques. The reliable use of these materials depends on the accurate characterization of their properties. In this work, the effect of physiologically relevant levels of dehydration on ex vivo tissue samples is quantified while controlling for variation within and between samples.

Newly-synthesized structure T (sT) hydrate show promising practical applications in hydrogen storage and transport, yet the properties remain poorly understood. Here, we develop a machine learning potential (MLP) of sT hydrogen hydrate derived from quantum-mechanical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Using this MLP forcefield, the structural, hydrogen diffusion, mechanical and thermal properties of sT hydrogen hydrate are extensively explored.
