Published: June 2015

Purpose: To explore first-person perspectives on activities and participation in everyday life among people with hand osteoarthritis (OA).

Method: Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 5 men and 26 women of different ages living with hand OA. Supplemental data were collected via photo-interviews of two of the men and nine of the women. The analytical process was inspired by the interpretive phenomenological analysis and informed by the interpretive frameworks of critical psychology and social practice theory.

Results: Empirical findings indicate that persons with hand OA experience activity problems and participation limitations in the conduct of everyday life. Activity problems were related to self-care, paid work, as well as leisure activities. The participants also reported employing different strategies attempting to overcome the challenges of their everyday lives in order to keep actively performing valued activities. They reported environmental support of utmost importance for these attempts. Social participation in networks was also reported to be affected by the participants' activity problems.

Conclusions: Arranging everyday life is complex and is carried out in structures of social practice. A supportive physical and social environment facilitates participation. The findings highlight the importance of paying attention to individual needs in rehabilitation processes.

Programmed Transformation of Osteogenesis Microenvironment by a Multifunctional Hydrogel to Enhance Repair of Infectious Bone Defects.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Orthopedic Institute, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Medical 3D Printing Center, The First Affiliated Hospital, Changzhou Geriatric hospital, MOE Key Laboratory of Geriatric Diseases and Immunology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Suzhou Medical College, Soochow University, Suzhou, Jiangsu, 215000, P. R. China.

Repair of infectious bone defects remains a serious problem in clinical practice owing to the high risk of infection and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the early stage, and the residual bacteria and delayed Osseo integrated interface in the later stage, which jointly creates a complex and dynamic microenvironment and leads to bone non-union. The melatonin carbon dots (MCDs) possess antibacterial and osteogenesis abilities, greatly simplifying the composition of a multifunctional material. Therefore, a multifunctional hydrogel containing MCDs (GH-MCD) is developed to meet the multi-stage and complex repair needs of infectious bone injury in this study.

Introduction: Chronic disease is generally known to affect dogs' quality of life (QoL) as well as being associated with increased strain on their owners. Gastrointestinal (GI) disease is a common problem in companion animal practice, yet little is known about the QoL of dogs with chronic enteropathy (CE) and how their owners and veterinarians assess it.

Methods: The aim of this study was to explore: (i) how dog owners and veterinarians observed and evaluated QoL for dogs with chronic GI disease, (ii) how having a dog with CE affected the owner's QoL, and (iii) characteristics of the communication and relationship between the dog owner and veterinarian.

Increasing evidence demonstrates a robust link between environmental pollutants and allergic reactions, with air and indoor pollution exacerbating respiratory allergies and climate change intensifying seasonal allergies. Comprehensive action, including government regulations, public awareness, and individual efforts, is essential to mitigate pollution's impact on allergies and safeguard public health and ecological balance. Recent findings indicate a strong correlation between environmental pollutants and allergic reactions, with air pollution from vehicular emissions and industrial activities exacerbating respiratory allergies like asthma and allergic rhinitis.
