The promise and potential of stem cell research is apparent. However, ethical questions still linger. There is as yet no consensus in the U.S. Congress on how to address the issue of reproductive cloning and media confusion of this and the quite separate issue of therapeutic cloning inhibits therapeutic advance. This paper outlines the need for the FDA to undertake a deliberate process, with input from all stakeholders, to authoritatively establish its jurisdiction over human reproductive cloning so as to foster the life-saving potential of therapeutic cloning.

Imprinting abnormalities pose a significant challenge in applications involving embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, and animal cloning, with no universal correction method owing to their complexity and stochastic nature. In this study, we targeted these defects at their source-embryos from same-sex parents-aiming to establish a stable, maintainable imprinting pattern de novo in mammalian cells. Using bi-paternal mouse embryos, which exhibit severe imprinting defects and are typically non-viable, we introduced frameshift mutations, gene deletions, and regulatory edits at 20 key imprinted loci, ultimately achieving the development of fully adult animals, albeit with a relatively low survival rate.

Maynard Smith's proposed two-fold cost of sex states that one of the disadvantages of clonal reproduction is the decreased ability to persist in dynamic ecosystems. However, the long-term persistence of some clonal alloploid lineages suggests that these lineages may not always be so ephemeral in nature. Understanding the stability of these lineages over time can inform our understanding of the advantages of an asexual mode of life.

The β-tubulin gene is essential for reproductive development, especially for male fertility, in different insects including Bombyx mori and Drosophila melanogaster. Targeting reproductive genes such as β-tubulin offers a promising approach to pest control that is more sustainable than chemical pesticides. However, there is limited research on the functional role of β-tubulin in Plutella xylostella, a highly damaging pest of vegetable crops.

The role of the plasminogen activation system is to regulate the activity of the extracellular protease plasmin. It comprises the urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), a specific extracellular protease which activates plasminogen, its inhibitor PAI1, and the urokinase plasminogen activator receptor, uPAR, which localizes the urokinase activity. The plasminogen activation system is involved in tissue remodeling through extracellular matrix degradation, and therefore participates in numerous physiological and pathological processes, which make it a potential biomarker.
