Self-oscillation, a control approach inspired by biological systems, demonstrates an autonomous, continuous, and regular response to constant external environmental stimuli. Until now, most self-oscillation systems have relied on a static external environment that continuously supplies energy, while materials typically absorb ambient energy only intermittently. In this article, we propose an innovative self-oscillation of liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) fiber-slide system driven by a self-flickering light source, which can efficiently regulate the energy input in sync with the self-oscillating behavior under constant voltage.

Previous research has focused on how different environments modulate fear learning and the accompanying prioritization of acquired threat cues in sensory cortices. Here, we focus on the other side of the coin and show how the acquisition of threat relevance influences the sensory processing of the environment and an associated context cue. Thereby, we observed that spatial suppression surrounding the focus of threat relevant cues extended by threat learning.

The physics of complex systems stands to greatly benefit from the qualitative changes in data availability and advances in data-driven computational methods. Many of these systems can be represented by interacting degrees of freedom on inhomogeneous graphs. However, the lack of translational invariance presents a fundamental challenge to theoretical tools, such as the renormalization group, which were so successful in characterizing the universal physical behaviour in critical phenomena.

We describe the clinical findings in a Japanese patient with unilateral traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) who underwent steroid pulse therapy followed by optic canal decompression surgery. The optic nerve function was assessed longitudinally and quantitatively by Goldmann visual fields (GVFs). This was accomplished by measuring the area of each isopter and scotoma, and the findings were compared with the visual acuities recorded during the course of the resolution of the TON.
