Background: Hallux valgus (HV) is associated with poorer performance during gait and balance tasks and is an independent risk factor for falls in older adults. We sought to assess whether corrective HV surgery improves gait and balance.

Methods: Using a cross-sectional study design, gait and static balance data were obtained from 40 adults: 19 patients with HV only (preoperative group), 10 patients who recently underwent successful HV surgery (postoperative group), and 11 control participants. Assessments were made in the clinic using body-worn sensors.

Results: Patients in the preoperative group generally demonstrated poorer static balance control compared with the other two groups. Despite similar age and body mass index, postoperative patients exhibited 29% and 63% less center of mass sway than preoperative patients during double-and single-support balance assessments, respectively (analysis of variance P =.17 and P =.14, respectively [both eyes open condition]). Overall, gait performance was similar among the groups, except for speed during gait initiation, where lower speeds were encountered in the postoperative group compared with the preoperative group (Scheffe P = .049).

Conclusions: This study provides supportive evidence regarding the benefits of corrective lower-extremity surgery on certain aspects of balance control. Patients seem to demonstrate early improvements in static balance after corrective HV surgery, whereas gait improvements may require a longer recovery time. Further research using a longitudinal study design and a larger sample size capable of assessing the long-term effects of HV surgical correction on balance and gait is probably warranted.

Background and Objective: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in Indonesia, where traditional herbal treatments like Zanthoxylum acanthopodium (andaliman) are culturally used. Investigating protein biomarkers such as E7, pRb, EGFR and p16 can help assess the efficacy of these treatments. Materials and Methods: There were 5 groups in this study: 2 control groups (C- and C+) and 3 treatment groups (each receiving one of three doses).

Puerarin Protects Myocardium From Ischaemia/Reperfusion Injury by Inhibiting Ferroptosis Through Downregulation of VDAC1.

J Cell Mol Med

December 2024

Institute of Cardiovascular Surgical Diseases, the First Affiliated Hospital, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, Nanchang, Jiangxi, China.

Despite improvements in interventional techniques leading to faster myocardial reperfusion postmyocardial infarction, there has been a significant rise in the occurrence of myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion injury (MI/RI). A deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of MI/RI could offer a crucial approach to reducing myocardial damage and enhancing patient outcomes. This study examined the myocardial protective properties of puerarin (PUE) in the context of MI/RI using hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) or ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury models were employed in H9c2 cells and C57BL/6 mice.

Exploring the significance of different amendments to improve phytoremediation efficiency: focus on soil ecosystem services.

Unité de Chimie Environnementale Et Interactions Sur Le Vivant (UCEIV), Université du Littoral Côte d'Opale (ULCO), 50 Rue Ferdinand Buisson, Calais Cedex, UR4492, France.

Phytoremediation is recognized as an environmentally, economically and socially efficient phytotechnology for the reclamation of polluted soils. To improve its efficiency, several strategies can be used including the optimization of agronomic practices, selection of high-performance plant species but also the application of amendments. Despite evidences of the benefits provided by different types of amendments on pollution control through several phytoremediation pathways, their contribution to other soil ecosystem functions supporting different ecosystem services remains sparsely documented.

2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is an important environmental pollutant that disturbs the immune balance of the maternal-fetal interface (MFI) and is also a common environmental factor for the formation of cleft palate (CP). Therefore, the purpose is to investigate whether TCDD can cause CP by disrupting the immune balance of the maternal-fetal interface. Fifteen C57BL/6J mice were randomly assigned to three groups: control group, TCDD group, and TCDD plus Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) (TCDD + FCA) group.

The time-course changes in postural control variability between neck pain and asymptomatic dental students.

Neuromuscular Research Lab, Interdisciplinary Centre for the study of Human Performance (CIPER), Faculty of Human Kinetics, University of Lisbon, 1499-002, Oeiras, Portugal.

Changes in postural control associated with clinical practice or specific conditions such as the presence of neck pain remain unexplored in dental students. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the time-course changes in postural control complexity among dental students enrolled in clinical practice, comparing those with and without neck pain. We used an online Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire for group allocation and center of pressure (CoP) oscillations with a tri-axial Bertec force plate.
