Aims: Recent studies have reported that intracellular calcium (Ca(2+)) mobilization is involved in homocysteine (Hcy)-induced endothelial dysfunction and the Na(+)/H(+) exchanger (NHE) is responsible for an increase in the intracellular Ca(2+) concentration in cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that inhibition of the NHE had protective effects on Hcy-induced endothelial dysfunction.
Methods: Acetylcholine-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation (EDR) and biochemical parameters were measured in the rat isolated aorta. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was designed by a specific fluorescent probe. The phosphorylation of the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) system was studied by Western blot.
Results: Cariporide significantly prevented Hcy-impaired EDR and increased nitric oxide (NO) release; endothelial NO synthase activity simultaneously decreased ROS production. We also found that cariporide blocked Hcy-induced NF-κB activation and inhibitor-κB degradation, thus inhibiting the production of tumor necrosis factor-α and intercellular adhesion molecule-1.
Conclusions: The mechanisms of protective effects of cariporide may be related to the inhibition of NHE and the decrease in oxidative stress and inflammatory injury.

The noise exposure levels of workers wearing hearing protective devices (HPDs) depend on ambient noise and the protective effect of hearing protectors. This cross-sectional study aimed to adjust for cumulative noise exposure (CNE) based on the effective protection of hearing protection devices and explore the dose-response relationship between noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and adjusted cumulative noise exposure. A questionnaire was used to acquire the basic characteristics and occupational information of noise-exposed workers.

In the search for novel natural products with hepatoprotective effects against acetaminophen-induced acute liver injury, the marine-derived fungus WHUF0198 was investigated. Seventeen undescribed pyranopyridone alkaloids, aculeapyridones A-Q (-), were isolated by bioactivity-guided fractionation of an extract obtained by coculture of the WHUF0198 with the mangrove-associated fungus sp. DM27.

The World Health Organization has identified multidrug-resistant bacteria as a serious global health threat. Gram-negative bacteria are particularly prone to antibiotic resistance, and their high rate of antibiotic resistance has been suggested to be related to the complex structure of their cell membrane. The outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria contains lipopolysaccharides that protect the bacteria against threats such as antibiotics, while the inner membrane houses 20-30% of the bacterial cellular proteins.

: This study explores how thoracic orientation affects lung pressure and injury outcomes from shock waves, building on earlier research that suggested human posture impacts injury severity. : A layered finite element model of the chest was constructed based on the Chinese Visual Human Dataset (CVH), including the rib and intercostal muscle layers. The dynamic response of the chest under 12 different angle-oriented shock waves under incident pressures of 200 kPa and 500 kPa was calculated.

Estimating pesticide concentrations in paddy rice systems is challenging due to unique cultivation methods and water management practices. Various models, ranging from simple exposure calculators to complex scenario-dependent tools, have been developed globally to address this issue (PADDY, MED-Rice, RICEWQ, PFAM). In Brazil, pesticides are used in paddy rice production, and there is a potential risk of these compounds reaching waterbodies.
