Porphyrins serve as photosensitizers (PS) in the realm of cancer photodynamic therapy (PDT). Upon excitation by laser light, porphyrins are capable of converting molecular oxygen into highly cytotoxic singlet oxygen (O). However, the rigid π-conjugated structure of porphyrins frequently results in the formation of aggregates in aqueous solutions, which leads to the self-quenching of the excited state.

pH responsive self-assembled supramolecular systems in water hold tremendous promise spanning across the various realms of science and technology. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of benzyl viologen (BV) based amphiphiles and their ability to form pH responsive aggregates with a water soluble anionic dye (electron donor), a polyelectrolyte (PE), and a surfactant. To counter the low solubility of viologen derivatives, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was employed as a solubility promoter and the host-guest complexes were characterized by NMR spectroscopy.

Catalysis of multicomponent transformations requires controlled assembly of reactants within the active site. Supramolecular scaffolds possess synthetic microenvironments that enable precise modulation over noncovalent interactions (NCIs) engaged by reactive, encapsulated species. While molecular properties that describe the behavior of single guests in host cavities have been studied extensively, multicomponent transformations remain challenging to design and deploy.

The non-covalent functionalization of black phosphorus (BP) was studied with a scope of ten tailor-made perylene diimides (PDIs). A combination of UV/Vis-, fluorescence-, as well as Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy was used to investigate the structural factors, which contribute to a pronounced PDI-BP interaction and thus support the protection of BP nanosheets against oxidative degradation. We were able to show, that water-soluble, amphiphilic PDIs with highly charged head groups can be used for the non-covalent functionalization of BP in aqueous media.
