Histopathologic evaluation of liver biopsy has played a longstanding role in the diagnosis and management of liver disease. However, the utility of liver biopsy has been questioned by some, given the improved imaging modalities, increased availability of noninvasive serologic tests, and development of artificial intelligence over the past several years. In this review, we discuss the current and future role of liver biopsy in both non-neoplastic and neoplastic liver diseases in the era of improved noninvasive laboratory, radiologic, and digital technologies.

November 2024

Laboratory of Spermatology, Department of Urology, Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, University of Ioannina, 45110 Ioannina, Greece.

: Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is a severe form of male infertility characterized by the absence of sperm in the ejaculate due to impaired spermatogenesis. Testicular sperm extraction (TESE) combined with intracytoplasmic sperm injection is the primary treatment, but success rates are unpredictable, causing significant emotional and financial burdens. Traditional clinical and hormonal predictors have shown inconsistent reliability.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a severe condition associated with numerous cardiovascular complications, including heart failure. The complex biological and morphological relationship between OSA and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) poses challenges in predicting adverse cardiovascular outcomes. While artificial intelligence (AI) has shown potential for predicting cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke risks in other conditions, there is a lack of detailed, bias-free, and compressed AI models for ASCVD and stroke risk stratification in OSA patients.

Background: The advancement in non-invasive methods for diagnosing and characterizing liver disease has achieved significant success. One such methods, FibroScan, combines non-invasiveness, rapidity, painlessness, and reproducibility. However, its accuracy and value are limited in many clinical settings.

Urinary bladder cancer is a global disease that poses medical and socioeconomic challenges to patients and healthcare systems. Predicting detrusor invasiveness and pathological grade of bladder cancer by the radiologist is imperative for informed decision-making and effective patient-tailored therapy. Cystoscopy and TURBT are the current gold standard for preoperative histologic diagnosis and local pathological staging but are compromised by their intrusiveness, under-sampling, and staging inaccuracies.
