Published: January 1989

The responses of individually housed crayfish (Orconectes virilis) were recorded during introduction of water from aquaria containing disturbed or undisturbed animals. When femaleO. virilis were disturbed, form II males assumed low-level altert postures significantly more than when those females were undisturbed. Similar results were obtained when the source animals were femaleCambarus diogenes, a sympatric crayfish. When the newtNotopthalamus viridescens was disturbed, the crayfish responses were strong but resembled stress behavior. The responses by crayfish to disturbed vs. undisturbed catfish (Ictalurus natalis) were not significantly different.

The impact of global changes on populations may not be necessarily uniform across a species' range. Here, we aim at comparing the phenotypic and transcriptomic response to warming and an invasive predator cue in populations across different geographic scales in the damselfly . We collected adult females in two ponds in southern Poland (central latitude) and two ponds in southern Sweden (high latitude).

Animals typically respond to their reflection as a conspecific and will respond as if the reflection were another animal that they could interact with, either fearfully or aggressively. We investigated how a modified reflective environment of a standard glass aquarium affects the aggressive and fearful behaviors of the crayfish , based on pre-determined behavior criteria. We found that the crayfish were both increasingly aggressive and slightly fearful in the reflective environment compared to minimal behavioral changes in the control non-reflective environment.

Disease outbreaks in crustacean aquaculture caused by opportunistic and obligate pathogens cause severe economic losses to the industry. Antibiotics are frequently used as prophylactic treatments worldwide, although its overuse and misuse has led to microbial resistance, which has driven the search for novel molecules with immunostimulant and antibacterial activities. Antimicrobial peptides (AMP) and double-stranded (ds)RNAs constitute promising immunostimulants in the fight against infectious diseases in aquaculture.

The role of parasites can change depending on the food web community. Predators, for instance, can amplify or dilute parasite effects on their hosts. Likewise, exposure to parasites or predators at one life stage can have long-term consequences on individual performance and survival, which can influence population and disease dynamics.
