Antioxidant activity and protective effects of Trapa japonica pericarp extracts against tert-butylhydroperoxide-induced oxidative damage in Chang cells.

In this study, the antioxidant properties of Trapa japonica pericarp extracts were evaluated through several biochemical assays: 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), alkyl radical scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay, ABTS radical scavenging activity and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). The antioxidant activities were compared with other natural and synthetic antioxidants. The results showed that higher radical scavenging activity and antioxidant capacity in FRAP than those of vitamin C as a positive control. T. japonica pericarp extracts have antioxidant properties through its ability to prevent tert-butylhydroperoxide (t-BHP)-induced toxicity which enhance the cell viability, reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, inhibits of oxidative damage and mitochondria dysfunction in Chang liver cells. Therefore, based on these finding, it seems reasonable to suggest that T. japonica pericarp extracts has the potential to protect liver against t-BHP-induced cell damage and should be considered as a potential functional food.

A total of four populations of reciprocal backcross recombinant inbred lines were produced from a cross between a wild accession of W630 and two major cultivars, Japonica Nipponbare and Indica IR36. Using these populations, quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis for eight morphological traits (culm length, panicle length, days to heading, panicle shape, pericarp color, hull color, seed shattering and seed awning) was carried out, and the putative QTL regions were compared among the populations. The QTLs with strong allele effects were commonly detected for culm length, panicle shape, pericarp color and hull color in all four populations, and their peak locations were close to the major genes of , , and , respectively.

Rice improvement depends on the availability of genetic variation, and AA genome species are the natural reservoir of favorable alleles that are useful for rice breeding. To systematically evaluate and utilize potentially valuable traits of new QTLs or genes for the Asian cultivated rice improvement from all AA genome species, 6,372 agronomic trait introgression lines (ILs) from BC to BC were screened and raised based on the variations in agronomic traits by crossing 170 accessions of 7 AA genome species and 160 upland rice accessions of as the donor parents, with three elite cultivars of , Dianjingyou 1 (a variety), Yundao 1 (a variety), and RD23 (an variety) as the recurrent parents, respectively. The agronomic traits, such as spreading panicle, erect panicle, dense panicle, lax panicle, awn, prostrate growth, plant height, pericarp color, kernel color, glabrous hull, grain size, 1,000-grain weight, drought resistance and aerobic adaption, and blast resistance, were derived from more than one species.
