Objective: To study the replantation methods and clinical results of amputated fingertip.

Methods: From October 2007 to June 2011, 18 fingers of 13 cases were replanted with anastomosis of palm vein and retaining the nail, including 9 males and 4 females, with an average age of 26 years old ranging from 17 to 45 years old. The time from injury to therapy was from 30 min to 5 h, time of broken finger ischemia was from 1.5 to 7 h. All broken fingers were preservation under normal temperature.

Results: All fingers were survived, no vascular crisis happened. All cases were followed up from 3 to 24 months with an average of 14 months. The length and shape of replanted fingers were similar to that of the healthy side. The new nails were smooth, the function was perfect, the sense of pain and touched sensation had been recovered. Their two-piont discriminations ranged from 3 to 6 mm with an average of 5 mm. According to the assessment standard of Chinese Medical Association of Hand Surgery, the results were excellent in 14 cases, good in 3 cases, poor in 1 case.

Conclusion: Fingertip replantation with anastomosis of palm vein and retaining the nail is regained satisfactory appearance and function of the digits with a high survival rate.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the superficial palmar branch of the radial artery (SUPBRA) to improve techniques for reconstructing palmar skin, focusing on its anatomy and harvesting methods.
  • Researchers dissected 19 male hand specimens to gather detailed anatomical data, including dimensions and positions of key structures related to SUPBRA, analyzing how best to utilize this flap in reconstruction efforts.
  • Results indicated that the SUPBRA has adequate dimensions for viability in surgical applications, with specific measurements and the identification of critical vascular contributions that ensure successful use in cases of hand injury.

Objective: We have left antegrade pulmonary blood flow (APBF) at bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt (BCPS) only for high-risk patients. This study evaluates the indication and the outcomes of patients with APBF, compared to those without APBF.

Methods: Patients with APBF after BCPS were identified among patients who underwent BCPS between 1997 and 2022.

Background: High ulnar nerve injuries is known to have unfavorable motor outcomes compared to other peripheral nerve injuries in the upper extremity. Functional muscle recovery after peripheral nerve injury depends on the time to motor end plate reinnervation and the number of motor axons that successfully reach the target muscle. The purpose of this study is to assess the functional recovery, and complications following performing supercharge end-to-side (SETS) anastomosis for proximal ulnar nerve injuries.

Anatomical Study of the Relationship between the Riché-Cannieu Anastomosis and the Kaplan Cardinal Line.

Rev Bras Ortop (Sao Paulo)

June 2024

Faculdade de Ciências Médicas e da Saúde, Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, Sorocaba, SP, Brasil.

To identify the location of the Riché-Cannieu anastomosis (RCA) in relation to the Cardinal Kaplan Line (KCL) and the Y line.  A total of 20 hands of 10 recently-deceased adult male cadavers aged between 27 and 66 years were dissected for the investigation of the relationship of the most distal point of the RCA with the KCL and with the Y line, drawn from the axis of the third metacarpal head, following the longitudinal axis of the hand.  In 20 limbs, the most distal point of the nerve communication was positioned distally in relation to the KCL.

Article Synopsis
  • A study assessed the prevalence of veno-venous collaterals (VVCs) in patients who underwent total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) from 1994 to 2022, finding VVCs in 15% of those evaluated.
  • The research included 635 patients, most commonly diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, with VVCs developing around 2.8 years post-surgery.
  • While VVCs did not significantly affect survival rates, they were linked to an increased risk for plastic bronchitis, and interventional closure of VVCs improved oxygen saturation in 66% of treated patients.
