Background: Systemic embolism is a serious and sometime fatal complication of rheumatic MS.

Objective: We assessed the predictive power of D-Dimer level to predict occurrence of left atrial (LA) thrombi in patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS).

Methods: D-dimer levels were analyzed for 24 patients with rheumatic MS with LA clot and 22 patients with rheumatic MS with no LA clot undergoing transeosophageal echocardiography. A level more than 4 µg/ml was taken as elevated to predict the presence of LA clot in the study groups.

Results: For a cut-off value of 4 µg/ml, sensitivity was 66.67 % and specificity 100 % for prediction of LA clot and AUC 0.710. A cut-off value of less than 1 µg/ml, sensitivity was 91.67 % and 87. 5 % negative predictive value for ruling out presence of LA clot and AUC 0.721.

Conclusion: A higher value of D-dimer can predict the possible presence of a LA clot and very low value can predict absence of clot in patients with rheumatic MS.

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the association between interatrial conduction block and postoperative atrial fibrillation, which can precipitate acute cardiopulmonary instability and is associated with subsequent heart failure, stroke, and mortality following cardiac surgery.

Methods: Perioperative 12-channel electrocardiograms from 3405 patients undergoing myocardial revascularization, valve surgery, aortic surgery, or combinations thereof, were considered. Clinical and electrographic parameters were compared between patients with and without atrial fibrillation, and significant variables were analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression.

Unicuspid unicommissural aortic valves: A surgical pathology analysis.

Indian J Pathol Microbiol

January 2025

Department of Pathology (Cardiovascular and Thoracic Division), Seth GS Medical College Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

The unicuspid unicommisural aortic valve is an uncommon congenital malformation that often manifests as stenosis with or without regurgitation in adults in their third to fifth decades of life. This report characterizes the morphological features of surgically excised unicuspid valves in adults with clinical correlation. Among the surgically excised aortic valves over a period of 10 years, the clinical data and morphological features of unicuspid aortic valves were analyzed.

Objectives: To evaluate the quality and types of care individuals with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis receive in the Canadian Maritime provinces, and determine associations with demographic, social, and patient-reported factors.

Methods: Individuals with knee osteoarthritis were invited to complete a healthcare quality survey based on the British Columbia Osteoarthritis (BC OA) survey. The cross-sectional descriptive observational survey assessed four healthcare quality indicators: advice to exercise, advice to lose weight, assessment of ambulatory function, and assessment of non-ambulatory function.

Background: Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and the unfolded protein response (UPR) are adaptive mechanisms for conditions of high protein demand, marked by an accumulation of misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Rheumatic autoimmune diseases (RAD) are known to be associated with chronic inflammation and an ERS state. However, the activation of UPR signaling pathways is not completely understood in Sjögren's disease (SD).

Triglyceride-independent associations between circulating levels of apolipoprotein C-III and biomarkers of inflammation.

Cardiovasc Diabetol

Facultat de Medicina i Ciències de la Salut, Unitat de Recerca en Lípids i Arteriosclerosi, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Reus, Spain.

Backgrounds And Aims: Preclinical studies suggest that a triglyceride (TG)-independent proinflammatory action of apolipoprotein C-III (apoCIII) exists. We aimed to investigate the relationship between circulating apoCIII levels and subclinical inflammation markers across different cohorts with distinctive inflammatory patterns: patients with metabolic disorders (MDs), patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and controls. Specifically, we assessed the associations of apoCIII with acute inflammation biomarkers (e.
