Prolonged preexposure (three days) of maleTrichoplusia ni to its six-component sex pheromone blend or its major pheromone component, (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate, reduced subsequent upwind flight responses to a pheromone source. Preexposure to (Z)-7-dodecenol increased upwind flight responses to a pheromone source combined with (Z)-7-dodecenol. The impact of long-term preexposures was moderate when compared to the more immediate effects of background noise. When (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate was presented as background noise, all maleT. ni failed to respond to a plume of the full pheromone blend. However, most moths succeeded in locking on to the pheromone plume and contacting the pheromone source in the presence of the five minor pheromone components as background noise. When (Z)-7-dodecenol was released as background noise the response rate to a pheromone source containing (Z)-7-dodecenol was increased dramatically. This indicates that males became adapted to (Z)-7-dodecenol while responding to the pheromone source. The results of this study indicate that both long-term preexposure treatments and immediate exposure to background noise can limit the ability of maleT. ni to respond to sex pheromone sources.

Male tephritid fruit flies typically emit pheromones from rectal glands to attract mates. Consistent with this, virgin females of the cucumber fruit fly, Zeugodacus cucumis (French), were found to be attracted to volatiles emitted by crushed male rectal glands in Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. Electrophysiological studies identified several male rectal gland compounds that triggered responses in female antennae.

Surfactin, a potent biosurfactant produced by , is synthesized using a non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) encoded by the operon. Despite its association with quorum sensing via the ComX pheromone, the dynamic behavior and in vivo quantification of the NRPS complex remain underexplored. This study established an in vivo quantification system using fluorescence labeling to monitor the availability of surfactin-forming NRPS subunits (SrfAA, SrfAB, SrfAC, and SrfAD) during bioprocesses.

In ant foraging, the manner of group-mass recruitment demonstrates remarkable adaptability between tandem running and mass recruitment. In contrast to tandem running, where a leader recruits only one worker, the first phase of group-mass recruitment is characterized by strong invitations from leaders that result in a large group of recruits leaving the nest together in a rush, thereby accelerating the process of recruiting towards discovered resources. Furthermore, unlike sole mass recruitment, the influence of leaders during this first phase enhances the accuracy of information about food qualities and ensures a more rational allocation of recruits compared to simply following a dominant pheromone trail.
