Copper-containing mesoporous carbon (Cu-MC) was prepared by a single-step surfactant-templating method. For comparison, copper-impregnated mesoporous carbon (Cu/MC) was also prepared by a surfactant-templating method and a subsequent impregnation method. Rhenium catalysts supported on copper-containing mesoporous carbon and copper-impregnated mesoporous carbon (Re/Cu-MC and Re/Cu/MC, respectively) were then prepared by an incipient wetness method, and they were applied to the liquid-phase hydrogenation of succinic acid to 1,4-butanediol (BDO). It was observed that copper in the Re/Cu-MC catalyst was well incorporated into carbon framework, resulting in higher surface area and larger pore volume than those of Re/Cu/MC catalyst. Therefore, Re/Cu-MC catalyst showed higher copper dispersion than Re/Cu/MC catalyst, although both catalysts retained the same amounts of copper and rhenium. In the liquid-phase hydrogenation of succinic acid to BDO, Re/Cu-MC catalyst showed a better catalytic activity than Re/Cu/MC catalyst. Fine dispersion of copper in the Re/Cu-MC catalyst was responsible for its enhanced catalytic activity.

Catalytic species such as molecular catalysts and metal catalysts are commonly attached to varieties of supports to simplify their separation and recovery and accommodate various reaction conditions. The physicochemical microenvironments surrounding catalytic species play an important role in catalytic performance, and the rational design and engineering of microenvironments can achieve more efficient chemical synthesis, leading to greener and more sustainable catalysis. In this review, we highlight recent works addressing the topic of the design and engineering of microenvironments of supported catalysts, including supported molecular catalysts and supported metal catalysts.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) from dilute sources is an important strategy for stabilizing the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide and global temperature. However, the adsorption process is extremely challenging due to the sluggish diffusion rate of dilute CO. Herein, -phthalic acid (PTA)-derived hierarchical porous activated carbon (PTA-C) with abundant micro- and mesopores was successfully prepared for dilute CO (2 vol %) capture at ambient conditions.

The growing demand for clean, decentralized energy has increased interest in blue energy, which generates power from water with different salt concentrations. Despite its potential as a renewable, low-cost energy source, optimizing electrode materials remains a challenge. This work presents a nanomaterial developed via microwave-assisted sol-gel methodology for blue energy applications, where ion diffusion and charge storage are critical.

Developing highly active and durable non-noble metal catalysts is crucial for energy conversion and storage, especially for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and lithium-oxygen (Li-O) batteries. Non-noble metal catalysts are considered the greatest potential candidates to replace noble metal catalysts in PEMFCs and Li-O batteries. Herein, we propose a novel type of non-noble metal catalyst (Fe-Hf/N/C) doped with Hf into a mesoporous carbon material derived from Hf-ZIF-8 and co-doping with Fe and N, which greatly enhanced the activity and durability of the catalyst.

Enzyme-based portable amperometric biosensors are precise and low-cost medical devices used for rapid cancer biomarker screening. Sarcosine (Sar) is an ideal biomarker for prostate cancer (PCa). Because human serum and urine contain complex interfering substances that can directly oxidize at the electrode surface, rapid Sar screening biosensors are relatively challenging and have rarely been reported.
