Independent carrot (Daucus carota) hairy root lines were established by inoculation of discs taken from the same carrot with Agrobacterium rhizogenes 8196 and A. tumefaciens C58C1(pRi8196) carrying pRi8196. Several lines were compared with respect to T-DNA length. One of them was found to have integrated sequences covering more than 50 kbp of the Ri plasmid.

An osmesl mutant delayed rice leaf senescence through inhibiting cell death by OsBI-1.

Leaf senescence following heading in rice is subject to rigorous regulation, with many of the underlying control mechanisms remaining largely unknown. In this study, we identified a novel gene, OsMESL, which exerts a positive regulatory effect on leaf senescence in rice. The T-DNA insertion mutant known as osmesl and RNA interference plants displayed a phenotype characterized by stay-green after heading.

Sequence-Dependent Surface Coverage of ssDNA Coatings on Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes.

A combination of experimental measurements and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations was used to investigate how the surfaces of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are covered by adsorbed ssDNA oligos with different base compositions and lengths. By analyzing the UV absorption spectra of ssDNA-coated SWCNTs before and after coating displacement by a transparent surfactant, the mass ratios of adsorbed ssDNA to SWCNTs were determined for poly-T, poly-C, GT-containing, and AT-containing ssDNA oligos. Based on the measured mass ratios, it is estimated that an average of 20, 22, 26, or 32 carbon atoms are covered by one adsorbed thymine, cytosine, adenine, or guanine nucleotide, respectively.

Potassium (K), being an essential macronutrient in plants, plays a central role in many aspects. Root growth is highly plastic and is affected by many different abiotic stresses including nutrient deficiency. The Shaker-type K channel Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) K Transporter 1 (AKT1) is responsible for K uptake under both low and high external K conditions.

Initiation of plant vascular tissue is regulated by transcriptional networks during development and in response to environmental stimuli. The WALL-ASSOCIATED KINASES (WAKs) and WAK-likes (WAKLs) are cell surface receptors involved in cell expansion and defence in cells with primary walls, yet their roles in regulation of vascular tissue development that contain secondary walls remains unclear. In this study, we showed tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) SlWAKL2 and the orthologous gene in Arabidopsis thaliana, AtWAKL14, were specifically expressed in vascular tissues.

The analysis of telomere length is an important component of many studies aiming to characterize the role of telomere maintenance mechanisms in cellular lifespan, disease, or in general chromosome protection and DNA replication pathways. Several powerful methods to accurately measure the telomere length from Southern blots have been developed, but their utility for large-scale genomic studies has not been previously evaluated. Here, we performed a comparative analysis of two recently developed programs, TeloTool and WALTER, for the extraction of mean telomere length values from Southern blots.
