Objectives: To examine the associations between multidimensional tobacco dependence and youths' asthma status with gender as an effect modifier.

Background: Despite the adverse respiratory effects, some adolescents with asthma smoke tobacco. Girls and boys have been shown to have different motivations for tobacco use.

Methods: Secondary analyses were conducted of data obtained from 1248 adolescents who completed the British Columbia Youth Survey of Smoking and Health II. The sample was limited to youth who reported current or experimental tobacco use and who provided asthma status information. Tobacco dependence was assessed with the modified-Fagerström Tolerance Questionnaire and four-dimension Adolescents' Need for Smoking Scale (ANSS), which assesses social dependence, physical dependence, emotional dependence, and sensory dependence on tobacco. All analyses were stratified by gender.

Results: The sample was 535 boys and 713 girls who were 15.9 years of age (SD = 1.5), on average. Gender was associated with both self-reported asthma status and the physical dependence dimension of the ANSS. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that girls with asthma, compared with girls without asthma, had higher physical tobacco dependence scores, after adjusting for demographic and other factors. None of the tobacco dependence dimensions was associated with the asthma status of boys.

Conclusions: Asthmatic girls who report smoking may be doing so because they develop physical dependence relatively quickly and lose their autonomy with respect to tobacco use. They may require significant support for smoking cessation, including cognitive behavioral therapy and nicotine replacement therapy.

Background: Revision of a unicompartmental to a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is often compared to primary TKA with regard to its technical difficulty and complication rates. We sought to compare medical and surgical complications following revision unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) to those following primary TKA and aseptic revision TKA.

Methods: A national administrative claims database was queried for patients undergoing revision UKA between 2010 and 2019.

Tobacco use disorder is a chronic disorder that affects more than one billion people worldwide and causes the death of millions each year. The rewarding properties of nicotine are critical for the initiation of smoking. Previous research has shown that the activation of glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) plays a role in nicotine self-administration in rats.

Background: Psychiatric disease burden in patients with Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has risen substantially over the past few decades. However, there is limited data on the relationship between IBD disease activity and the incidence of psychiatric comorbidities. We sought to conduct a population-based study to investigate the impact of early onset disease activity in newly diagnosed IBD patients on psychiatric disease diagnoses and medication usage.

Department of Applied Health Science, School of Public Health, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, United States of America.

Purpose: College students are at higher risk for problematic substance use and disordered eating. Few studies have examined the comorbid risks associated with OCD despite the increased prevalence of OCD among young adults. This study examined substance use and disordered eating risk associated with OCD conditions among college students and how this association may vary by sex/gender.

Article Synopsis
  • Patient-specific FDG PET can identify abnormal brain activity in HIV patients before and after starting combination antiretroviral therapy (cART).
  • Studies on these changes were limited to a small number of patients and timeframes.
  • The analysis found that abnormal FDG uptake areas decreased significantly after 6 months of cART, suggesting FDG PET may be useful for early monitoring of treatment effects.
