Bit commitment is a fundamental cryptographic primitive in which Bob wishes to commit a secret bit to Alice. Perfectly secure bit commitment between two mistrustful parties is impossible through asynchronous exchange of quantum information. Perfect security is however possible when Alice and Bob split into several agents exchanging classical and quantum information at times and locations suitably chosen to satisfy specific relativistic constraints. Here we report on an implementation of a bit commitment protocol using quantum communication and special relativity. Our protocol is based on [A. Kent, Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 130501 (2012)] and has the advantage that it is practically feasible with arbitrary large separations between the agents in order to maximize the commitment time. By positioning agents in Geneva and Singapore, we obtain a commitment time of 15 ms. A security analysis considering experimental imperfections and finite statistics is presented.

Donating money to worthy social causes is one of the most impactful and efficient forms of altruism, but skepticism often clouds perceptions of donors' motives for giving. We propose a solution that reduces this skepticism: Instead of giving a single large donation, donors can partition their donations into multiple, smaller ones. Ten preregistered studies with 3,816 participants supported this idea.

Current advances for omics-guided process optimization of microbial manufacturing.

Bioresour Bioprocess

April 2023

Key Laboratory of Medical Molecule Science and Pharmaceutical Engineering, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Institute of Biochemical Engineering, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, 100081, People's Republic of China.

Currently, microbial manufacturing is widely used in various fields, such as food, medicine and energy, for its advantages of greenness and sustainable development. Process optimization is the committed step enabling the commercialization of microbial manufacturing products. However, the present optimization processes mainly rely on experience or trial-and-error method ignoring the intrinsic connection between cellular physiological requirement and production performance, so in many cases the productivity of microbial manufacturing could not been fully exploited at economically feasible cost.

To meet the demand for precision medicine, researchers are committed to developing novel strategies to reduce systemic toxicity and side effects in cancer treatment. Targeting peptides are widely applied due to their affinity and specificity, and their ability to be high-throughput screened, chemically synthesized and modified. More importantly, peptides can form ordered self-assembled structures through non-covalent supramolecular interactions, which can form nanostructures with different morphologies and functions, playing crucial roles in targeted diagnosis and treatment.

Molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of tumour suppressor genes in lung cancer.

Biomed Pharmacother

April 2024

Department of Life Sciences, School of Pharmacy, International Medical University, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur 57000, Malaysia. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Tumour suppressor genes are crucial in the development of lung cancer, which is a common type of cancer that often shows resistance to initial treatment.
  • Extensive research has been focused on understanding how mutations in these genes lead to cancer progression and treatment failure, particularly looking at specific chromosomal areas vulnerable to loss of heterozygosity (LOH) due to genetic and environmental factors.
  • The review aims to provide insight into the molecular mechanisms behind these alterations and to inspire future research efforts for more effective lung cancer therapies.
