Transplacental administration of serotonin metabolite 5-methoxyindole-3-acetic acid possessing blastomogenic activity induced the development of malignant and benign neoplasms (lymphosarcomas, adenomas, hepatomas and other tumours) in 84% of C57BL/6 mouse progeny. The number of neoplasms was significantly higher, than in the control, they appeared earlier and were more malignant.

This study investigated the genotoxic effects of chromium (Cr) in Hsd:ICR mice, considering factors such as oxidative state, apoptosis, exposure pathway, duration, pregnancy, and transplacental exposure. Genotoxicity was assessed using the erythrocytes' micronucleus (MN) assay, while apoptosis was evaluated in nucleated blood cells. The results showed that Cr(III) (CrK(SO ) and CrCl ) did not induce any marked genotoxic damage.

Benzene is an environmental toxicant and known human carcinogen. Recent epidemiological studies show a relationship between exposure to benzene in pregnant women and increased incidence of childhood leukemias. Studies in murine models demonstrate a relationship between carcinogenicity and in utero benzene exposure which was sex dependent, thus the cellular mechanisms of benzene toxicity by sex require further studies.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons like benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) are generated during incomplete combustion of organic materials. Prior research has demonstrated that BaP is a prenatal ovarian toxicant and carcinogen. However, the metabolic pathways active in the embryo and its developing gonads and the mechanisms by which prenatal exposure to BaP predisposes to ovarian tumors later in life remain to be fully elucidated.

Hydrolysis of glucobrassicin by plant or bacterial myrosinase produces multiple indoles predominantly indole-3-carbinol (I3C). I3C and its major product, 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM), are effective cancer chemopreventive agents in pre-clinical models and show promise in clinical trials. The pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of DIM have been studied in both rodents and humans and urinary DIM is a proposed biomarker of dietary intake of cruciferous vegetables.
