Activation pattern recognition receptors can cause the startup of downstream signaling pathways, the expression of inflammatory factors, and finally immunological inflammatory reaction. Either exogenous pathogenic microorganisms or endogenous tissue components can activate these pattern recognition receptors as ligands at varying degrees, and then cause the immunological inflammatory reaction. Therefore, it is of great significance to inhibit relevant receptors, as well as the immunological inflammatory reaction, in order to avoid tissue injury during the course of disease. Baicalin is able to specifically inhibit the expression of TLR2/4-NOD2, inhibit the expression of inflammatory factors IL-1beta, IL-6 and TNF-alpha, and thereby reducing the injury of the tissue cells during the course of disease. This effect is non-specific with tissues, which is of great theoretical and practical significance in druggability. In addition, the drug metabolism and toxicity of baicalin are also discussed for its druggability in this article.

Strong interaction between plasmon and topological surface state in BiSe/CuS nanowires for solar-driven photothermal applications.

Sci Adv

Developing high-performance photothermal materials and unraveling the underlying mechanism are essential for photothermal applications. Here, photothermal performance improved by strong interaction between plasmon and topological surface state (TSS) is demonstrated in BiSe/CuS nanowires. This hybrid, which CuS nanosheets were grown on BiSe nanowires, leverages the plasmon resonance and TSS-induced optical property, generating wide and efficient light absorption.

Open set recognition (OSR) requires models to classify known samples while detecting unknown samples for real-world applications. Existing studies show impressive progress using unknown samples from auxiliary datasets to regularize OSR models, but they have proved to be sensitive to selecting such known outliers. In this paper, we discuss the aforementioned problem from a new perspective: Can we regularize OSR models without elaborately selecting auxiliary known outliers? We first empirically and theoretically explore the role of foregrounds and backgrounds in open set recognition and disclose that: 1) backgrounds that correlate with foregrounds would mislead the model and cause failures when encounters 'partially' known images; 2) Backgrounds unrelated to foregrounds can serve as auxiliary known outliers and provide regularization via global average pooling.

The progression of COVID-19 involves a sophisticated and intricate interplay between the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the host's immune response. The immune system employs both innate and adaptive mechanisms to combat infection. Innate immunity initiates the release of interferons (IFNs) and pro-inflammatory cytokines, while the adaptive immune response involves CD4+ Th lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and CD8+ Tc cells.

Coercive control is a widespread globally prevalent and often missed pattern of intimate partner violence (IPV) that increases the risk of physical disease and mental illness tremendously for its victims, usually women and children. Besides it can lead to femicide and infanticide when red flags are being ignored. Here we describe an illustrative case.

EXPRESS: Individuals with developmental prosopagnosia tend to focus more evenly on facial features.

Q J Exp Psychol (Hove)

The causes of developmental prosopagnosia (DP) have long been a focus of research; however, the cause has not been conclusively identified. This study uses behavioral and eye movement techniques to explore the causes of DP by comparing differences in fixation patterns during face recognition between the DP and control groups. A mixed experimental design of 2 (group: control, DP) x 3 (area of interest (AOI): eyes, nose, mouth) was adopted, dividing faces into 3 AOIs: eyes, nose, and mouth.
